Major Problem With Live Chess

Sort:
ba1943

I have uncovered a major problem with our Beta Live Chess Site!  Not enough players are trying it.  Wow, what a site.  I have found a couple of players there and was luck enough to get in a couple of games.  If you like chess, you have got to try this place out.  It is working great except for the low turnout.

Now is the time to get use to the fast pace action that this site offers before the ratings get reset (I know, I know, not everyone believes in ratings).

I have experienced that same problem.  Also I don't like the blitz chess (5 minute games ) as well as turn based chess.  One feature that I do like that I don't know if everyone is aware of, instead of 5 minute games you can set games for 30 minutes or I haven't tried it yet but maybe 60 minute games.  This is a more realistic setting.  I think it is as close to a real game as you will find on the internet.  Also if you set the games correctly as you make moves you receive additional time.  The reason I like the ability to change the setting is you honestly can not have a game in 5 minutes.

I think another solution would to invite friends and set up a time to go to live chess ahead of time meet and have a game.

Has any one found a way to identify if someone in the live site is currently in a game.  I would like to find a way to see the players that are available for a game.  Anyone found a way to do this?

I have tried to play but no one is ever there to play, so I gave up playing live chess

yes ba1943 in the control panel box click on rooms, it says members in room and then games in play.

Thanks for replying Grim.  I am probably doing something wrong but when I follow your instructions I can see the number of games and the number of members, but I cannot see which members are in a game.

When more members start playing live chess it will be important to know who is currently available for a game.

Yes. When I have been there, you can see the names, but are they there or not?  I think people go in, get bored and go for a coffee or something so it looks like they are there.  Maybe a button to click so you can say youll be back in x minutes, then at least new players know.  Also, this happened once with me - I put an open seek out, forgot about it and went back to the forums.  while i was reading, suddenly the game appeared , 5 mins each. Great!!  This is ok.  So yesterday, i put a seek out and went back to the forums expecting the same to happen.  But when i went back to the on-line chess i could see that someone had accepted the challenge, made a move, waited 3 mins for me to move and aborted.  If I had been warned, i could have gone straight back.

No problem ba1943, I went to double check and you are right there is no way to tell who is in a game already and who isn't. maybe leave a recommendation in the bug department. I know it is not a true bug but it can end up bugging people :)

I did give them the suggestion via a bug report.  As the site develops Im sure they will add the nice to have bells and whisles.

2 problems exist, the first, universal; the second, personal:

1) there's no obvious link(s) to live chess. no one will go there if they either don't know it exists, aren't reminded of the fact it exists, or can't find it.

2) the time stamp doesn't work right. when i played there, i found i was losing time even though i was moving far faster than the increment, while my opponent was gaining time.

I noticed that same problem yesterday batgirl, I was wondering what was happening to my clock. It was also lagging on my moves I would move and it would take 5 sec. to actually move
batgirl
That's not a good thing... especially in blitz games. Such a basic problem must be resolved.
Patzer24
Does the lag occur just when playing the live chess or on other sites you experience lag also?
Meowdar
The time stamp doesn't bother me too much because I don't play blitz much.  But I agree that it's crazy not to have a prominent link posted somewhere!  That's the primary reason for the low turnout.
batgirl
lag isn't generally a problem on other sites.

MattHelfst the lag has occured just here, and the three sec. incriments I was supposed to be getting after every move was only 1 sec. Yes batgirl that is a major need negative in blitz games.

PawnFork

Stack overflow at line 0!

Will try again soon.

I got the same error message as Pawnfork.  Couldn't get on to play live.

Also, need a link to the live site on the main chess.com page.
