Merry Christmas! ๐
MERRY CHRISTMAS
'Twas the night before Christmas, and hours before dawn,
Not a chess piece was stirring, not even a pawn.
The kings were both castled to the g-file with care
In hopes that their enemy wouldn't bother them there;
The pawns guarded them as well as they could,
While visions of promotion danced in their wood.
The knights were poised to attack with a leap,
But I left the chessboard for a good night's sleep.
Before I had made it quite out of the room,
The front door flew open and slammed with a boom!
I turned to see what might have caused such a rumpus,
And there at my door was none other than Krampus!
His eyes glared with malice beyond human ken,
And his hoofs slowly made their way into my den.
His menacing horns nearly touched the tall ceiling!
(I thought this encounter to be most unappealing.)
He glanced at the chessboard, then grinned as he said,
"I come bringing death, but what if instead
We finish this game you have on the board.
If you win, your own life shall be your reward."
As I pondered this offer extended so grossly,
I wished I had studied those endgames more closely.
I moved toward the table and pulled out the chair.
"Your move," he growled as I said a quick prayer.
When I had resolved what my next move would be,
A jingling sound startled both Krampus and me.
My opponent looked toward the hearth with a sneer.
An old, bearded elf dressed in fur had appeared!
"I thought you might show," Krampus said to the elf.
The elf smiled and said, "I'll play you myself,
But I must make it quick; I'm traveling tonight.
I have presents to give when we're done with this fight."
Relieved, but still nervous, I gave up my seat
And stood by the table to watch them compete.
St. Nick held his pipe as he studied the game,
Then the pieces came alive as he called them by name:
"Now, King's Knight! Now, Bishops! Her Majesty, the Queen!
Let's play the best chess game the world's ever seen!
On light squares and dark squares, on each rank and file,
Let's finish off Krampus with a laugh and a smile!"
There were tactical tensions and fine calculations,
Piece sacrifices and sharp combinations.
Then Krampus moved a pawn up two squares,
And said, "Elf, you'll never catch me unawares!"
St. Nick replied with an air nonchalant,
"You seem to have forgotten about en passant.
But I think what will make you the most irate
Is the fact that this capture leaves you in checkmate."
The demon looked down at the chessboard in terror,
Then wailed as he saw his calamitous error.
His screaming still echoed as he vanished from sight.
St. Nick said to me, "You've had quite a fright!
My present to you is another blessed year.
Now study those endgames, and live without fear."
Back up the chimney and into his sleigh,
St. Nick went on his magical way.
No matter what name the celebration has โ Solstice, Yule, Hanukkah, Christmasโฆ It is always about remembering sacred covenants and wise ancient ancestors. Universally and historically, many structures tried to unify but also control the Earthโs high-energy Solstice days telluric moment for their own interests. For me, it is not about commerce but about the connection with divinity that is important. So, it does not matter how you celebrate or how you connect with divinity. Happy and peaceful holidays, may they bring peace to the world. Even if it just means getting together with friends, it can be very meaningful (as is friendship). Happy celebrations.
Merry Christmas guys! At least in India anyway!! It's exactly 12:00AM! ๐ ๐คถ
