Aged 19, I had the great pleasure of playing against Sir Stuart Milner-Barry, in a county match. He played the Milner-Barry Gambit against me and thrashed me. He was a lovely, kind old gentleman, who was 60 years older than me.
Much later, I learned that he had played a very important role in breaking the German Enigma codes in World War 2.
I played an IM in a simul. Can't rem his name as it was decades ago. Materially I was equal for the vast majority of the match. Only he had a central wedge of pawns and I had pawn islands all over the place..... you can guess the rest
