Nebulous tournament

Sort:
2030Mark

So I'm signed up with 1500+ others to play in a tournament today.

The day is half over.

I click on the tournament and see nothing!

There is NO explanation for who I will be playing against and when I will start.
Thoughts?

Is it a Daily tournament?

Yes.

71st Chess.com Quick Knockouts (1201-1400).

I don't know how or why it is categorized as "daily" but it is.
I guess, you play every day until the tournament is over?

But it's still a mystery as to who I am playing first, at what time,
and how I can access the game?

It hasn't started yet. I think staff manually start those and sometimes they start late

It's a Daily tournament because players have up to one day, in this case, to make their move when it's their turn.

OK thanks. It's my first tournament and it's all still quite mysterious to me.

There are no instructions on how to actually start playing a game,
when it starts. Also it's billed as starting today but also billed as an October tournament!

2030Mark

For example:

"Start Date: Sep 30, 2024"

"This is the October 2024 Official Chess.com Quick Knockouts Chess.com Tournament."

Can you begin to see why I am confused?

Martin you seem to be a veteran here.
Is it common for organizers to have 1500+ players sign up for a tournament and then
delay its start by more than two days without notice or explanation?

Martin_Stahl

As mentioned, I believe those specific events are manually started and occasionally there are delays.

When the tournament starts, you'll automatically get paired and have 10 games started.

When you say "10 games started" do you mean 10 games/20 players will be playing at the same time, or will I be playing 10 games at the same time?

Sorry but nothing is clear to me at all about this.

It’s a daily game meaning you have a certain amount of days to make your move in each game, so the game will probably take place over the course of some weeks

You'll play five members in your group, two games each, one as white and one as black.

I don’t think he knows what a daily game is

You are right. This is my first time. It could be interpreted in many different ways.

Since I believe we are allowed 24 hours per move, shouldn't it be called a daily move?
To me a "daily game" logically would mean a new game each day.
So I don't understand why they came up with "daily game"?
What part of our games is daily, except for the fact that we must make a move at the minimum of one each day?
I'm serious about my questions.

Thanks Martin.
It's really weird.
There really is nothing "daily" about our games except for the fact that we must make at least one move each day. That's it. A minimum of one daily move.
I see they have "daily games" where you can make one move in anywhere from one each day to one in two weeks!

Martin now I'm really confused.

So the tournament started today three days late.
I got notified today in four e-mails that four games have started.
Fine, there are five players in my group and I'm the fifth, so that makes sense.
I start the four games. Now I see at the site there are 10 games running now!
Is that correct? I go from famine to feast in just a few hours!
It's one thing to be notified I have 24 hours to make a move in a game.
But if the above is correct, you take 24 and divide it by 10 and you get 2.4 hrs!
So I don't have 24 hours to make a move, I have 2.4 hours if you think of it that way.
When I signed up for this tournament I had no idea I would be playing 10 games simultaneously. That's absolutely CRAZY.
Your thoughts Martin?

2030Mark

"Daily Chess gives you a specific number of days to make each move. Games can last days, weeks, or even months. This flexibility often leads players to manage multiple Daily games simultaneously."

This is getting more complicated and restrictive the more I learn!
When I signed up for the tournie I had no idea I would be playing 10 games simultaneously.
That's crazy!
I figured I would play someone, finish the game and then player another opponent.
The one move per 24 hr. rule mentioned above isn't quite that. Not even close to that!

That rule when combined with another rule that says you must keep a move per 12 hours average means that in reality, you must average 10 moves per day, not one!
These facts need to be up front and center, especially for newbies like me when they sign up for a "Daily Tournament".

Martin_Stahl

You have 24 hours to make a move in each game. After your opponents in each game move you'll have 24 hours to make your next move.

Martin that's what I initially thought. But if you go to the tournament page and scroll down you will read this:

Max Avg. Time/Move12 hours.
That changes the entire "24 hours to make your next move" business.
Because if you wish to take your time and use the maximum 24 hours per move per game,
you will probably find yourself at the end of the tournament declared ineligible to play in any more daily tournies.
Reason being, your Avg. time/move will be 24 hours NOT 12 hours as they state.
So it seems, yes you can take up to 24 hours per move per game, but don't do that ALL the time or your average will be above 12 hours/move.
Please correct me if I am wrong.
