Nervous About Chess?

Whoever is reading this, please read the whole post and don’t be intimidated by all this text, it will help you a lot. If you are nervous about chess tournaments or if you have a big chess match but you are very nervous and don’t know a lot about chess, and keep losing, I have the solution. I highly recommend you buy a membership, but if you don’t have one, it’s still ok. I’m going to break it down into a few pieces.

1. Just learn, that’s the basics

Learning. We do it for everything, no matter what it is. It’s the same for chess too! For example, the learning tool over here in chess.com, it helped me a lot in learning quickly, and you should try it too!Although we have a limited number of lessons per week, there’s another way. There’s other chess learning or playing apps or websites right? Use those a bit, but from all I tried, this was the most useful. Another free method to learn chess quick is to watch YouTube videos. I personally watched chess.com’s old videos, and although they were old, they helped me a lot. As they say, Old Is Gold. Play against bots too, make it a kind of goal to beat all of them in one section, for example all the ones in the beginner section or something.

2. Openings, defences and DEVELOP, DEVELOP, DEVELOP.

If you don’t know what the term “developing” means in chess, it means to make your pieces go to a more useful square from their starting position. So just keep developing your pieces. Openings? Maybe you know them, maybe you don’t. “Openings” means a position at the starting of the game. Didn’t get it? Lemme give you an example. You have the white pieces. So you first move one of your knights, or a pawn, or a different pawn. There are lots of openings in chess. Try out the common ones, and even learn ones for the black pieces. Whichever you think best suits you, and you can play with comfortably, choose that one. My signature opening is the knight-pawn opening (idk what it’s called 😂). Defences, the meaning is in the word! It’s easy, just learn a few defences against your opponent’s pieces, whether they have the black pieces or the white ones.

3. Find out some of the common traps in chess

What do I mean by traps? I mean skewers, pins, forks, and other traps. For example, the king and rook fork. It is one of the most common ones, so be sure to look out for it, your opponent checks you and then forces your king to move somewhere else, if no other pieces of your color are defending the square where this trap can be set. Sometimes you lose your knight, but most probably you won’t, or the opponent won’t. Checkmates, they’re the moves which end the game. If you don’t know what a checkmate means (all of you probably know but I’m just putting it here), it means that your opponent has checked your king, and your king has nowhere to move, because either it’s a smothered mate (your pieces surround your king while the opponent can checkmate, your king has nowhere to move because of YOUR PIECES, so it’s kinda your fault?), or a normal one. And always look out for skewers or pins, and remember, if it’s an absolute skewer, if your king is two squares away from your other piece, you can defend it, so that’s a plus. So always make sure that doesn’t happen, or can’t happen.

4.Take time to move, and think

It’s literally in the title. But still, take time to think and move, don’t hesitate. And don’t play bullet games like for 1 minute or blitz for 5 minutes. Play rapid for 10 minutes or 30 minutes, do that you have more time to think, and do you know any tournament or game which has a 1 minute timer? I bet you don’t. So play with a 30 minute clock or a 10 minute one.

5.Do chess puzzles-

Doing chess puzzles is a great way to make moves fast, and it strengthens your ability to notice checkmates or advantages quickly. There are a lot of ways to try chess puzzles, and you can even ask a relative or a friend to MAKE a puzzle, no matter how easy it will be. And if the puzzle looks easy, but there are a lot of moves to the same square, try all of them. And never hesitate to ask for help in puzzles.

All of these helped me learn chess super quickly, and you can too! Just- just don’t “waste” your time in OTF (no offence guys). And I’m not joking, I’m serious, these helped me learn chess super- oh I already told you guys that, and I will be posting more helpful tips here, so be sure to check everyday, and if this dies, I’ll post the same thing again, and I hope this helps, as I want other people to learn chess fast. I’m still learning though, cuz in life, you just keep learning.
