I don't know if I'm "decent" enough to enter this conversation, but I'm going to give you some advice based on my experiences back when I started.
First of all, just enjoy the game, you need aa certain amount of passion in order to advance quickly. Why would you even bother to play if you don't enjoy it?
Second of all, avoid playing blitz or bullet time controls if you just want to improve, blitz is mostly intuition and it can really mess with your calculation and bullet is even worse. If you are below 1500 rapid, you'd be playing blind chess basically and the one who wins is the one with better luck or speed.
Thirdly, don't look for opening traps for cheap wins. Elo is just a score to predict your skill, it's not always correct. It's a loss that teaches you, not a win. If you play for traps, eventually you will reach a certain level (900-1000) where your opponents will stop falling for your traps, and now you don't know what to do because your skill will be much weaker than your elo. It is your skill that matters the most, not your elo.
Also, watch chess videos and avoid buying books or courses, unless you are serious about chess, don't buy them courses or books below 1300. Instead, go on youtube and there would be millions of videos about chess, it might be hard to find some things that are similar to ones you are looking for, but most videos are very informative and most of all, free!
Lastly, and the most important, don't be discouraged when you lose! Losing is part of the process, it means you are putting yourself out there against people who are better than you. And if you feel tired or burnt out from chess, take a break. Refresh your brain and come back stronger, but stay consistant.
I am fairly new to chess and was hoping someone who is patient and decent chess player to give me advice on how to advance in the game of chess.
