Even at the top level, memorization of lines is just a tool—it doesn’t replace the need for creativity.
Should I quit chess?
I started chess 4 years ago. Still a beginner witha very low elo. I believe I was 1600 at one point , stopped playing and got back to 1000 points. I do not care much about my elo.
I have not the intention ( and don't have the desire and not capable ) to become a pro. But knowing that in the end it comes down to memorize lines makes me want to quit.
What is your opinion?
.
I do not understand. If, as you say, you have no intention, desire or capability to become a pro, why do you want to quit knowing that the issue that bothers you ( memorizing lines ) will never concern you ?
I could be wrong, but if you want my opinion, I think you actually care about your "elo" a lot more than you think... That number ( or rather, the importance given to it ) is the cause of every frustration and disaffection...
At 1000 level there is a LOT of creativity and zero things to remember (learn three basic opening principles and you are prepared).
If you are not enjoying it anymore, then stop. I used to enjoy chess training solving and studying every day. Then I found it stressful not enjoyable anymore, so I stopped. I find it still fun playing casually, so I still play is casual. No solving no studying.
You DONT have to memorize lines, you have to understand positions, calculate more than 2-3 moves ahead, perceive dangers, know when to attack or defend, play for the initiative when opponent plays a passive move,etc.. this way chess can be a beautiful game
I do know the answer to this question but I just need to hear the opinion from others.

But when I saw Fischer talk about chess the idea of quitting chess came up my mind.
He is right that as today it's all about learning the lines and there is not much room for creativity.
BUT , that doesn't apply to me and never will be , because I have not the intention ( and don't have the desire and not capable ) to become a pro.

Never give up!!!
Hi there,
Opening preparation is a lot about memorization at the very top level. Below that, games are almost always decided by lack of understanding or blunders.
About quitting, I would consider it only if you don't enjoy playing it, regardless of the results.
If you're motivated to keep on training, I am rated over 2400 online (https://www.chess.com/member/ppandachess). I created a free course that will teach you a training plan to improve. Feel free to check it out: https://www.panda-chess.com/daily-improvement-plan
I get frustrated with my rating. And admittedly, that's one of the ways in which we measure our progress. However, I think it's useful to distinguish between the 'process' and the 'product'. Actually my elo has taken a dip lately, I've been trying a few different things, trying to be a bit more adventurous and not just relying on the lines I've memorised. I've made quite a few mistakes, but actually enjoyed those games and maybe learned a few things.
Sometimes one can just enjoy playing without battling with success/failure of an elo number - because that number will continually be changing for you, it's like Sisyphus...
But I totally get your frustration and I think most people have had similar experiences.
Have you considered playing fischer random chess? That's a good way to get away from the tyranny of prepared lines.
I agree. I hate this game sometimes, but some of the people who play it, I despise, that is why I have chat off.

Why do you have to just quit chess when you can just learn more about it and you could just become a grandmaster later in your life?

NEVER EVER GIVE UP!
We're no strangers to love
You know the rules and so do I
A full commitment's what I'm thinkin' of
You wouldn't get this from any other guy
I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
We've known each other for so long
Your heart's been aching, but you're too shy to say it
Inside, we both know what's been going on
We know the game and we're gonna play it
And if you ask me how I'm feeling
Don't tell me you're too blind to see
Never gonna give you up
Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
Never gonna make you cry
Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you
Never gonna give you up

Your on my despise list, now go and haunt someone else, troll.
But knowing that in the end it comes down to memorize lines makes me want to quit.
In short, you shouldn't even think about this issue, because you will never have a problem with it, unless you get to top 50-100 players in the world (and even then, games are not decided by that in many cases).
Heck, the last WC game was decided by an intermediate level blunder in the endgame.
Should you quit? This is up to you, and up to you only. Only you know if you enjoy playing and what motivates you in the first place.
I do know the answer to this question but I just need to hear the opinion from others.
