Super Grand Master (SGM) title

Here and there I've heard conversations about introduce SGM title. Although I'm not entirely sure this is necessary I have some ideas how it should look like and I want you to critisise my ideas and improve them. At the begining some player would get SGM title at once and that would be:

  • world champion
  • former world champions
  • players who at least once get 2800 elo in live rating list
  • every player who at least once participate in Candidates

For new candidates to SGM title I would prepere new norms. My ideas are:

  1. 2750 elo in live rating
  2. Defeat at least three players who are already SGM
  3. Qualify to Candidates

I don't want to be more then 30-40 SGM on the planet but no clue if it would work or not. One of the ideas behind this concept of new title is that we already use expressions like elite gm for naming player above 2700 elo.

This seems like a good idea, but unfortunately the race to first become the youngest SGM would occur, as well as many other exploitative things, like the chess world has and is still trying to do with the GM title.

Better question: why on earth do we even need titles? A player's rating tells you everything about a player that you need to know. Titles are superfluous and no other sport except martial arts has such a ridiculously pompous and needless thing.

It wouldn't be necessary if they hadn't lowered the standards to obtain a grandmaster title. There are so many loopholes in the title now that it means nothing compared to what it used to be. I believe it was the FIDE president back in the 1980s that said he wanted a grandmaster in every country so he figured out ways to give titles away based on senior tournaments and women's tournaments and other tournaments just to include everyone.
