two player pieces upside down?

When playing with a friend locally on my iPad, one side the pieces are always upside down. I can’t find a way to solve it. There must be a way surely? You can “flip” the board, but who the heck plays chess like that? Clearly I’m missing something, no one would design a chess game like that...

Is there a setting in the menu to change the behavior?
Doesn’t appear to be no
well - I have gone through all the settings and cant find a way of changing it. That's such a shame. I'm sure you used to be able to do this....
