Unexplained resignation

Sort:
55NORTH

7 moves into a game. Position seems balanced with not particular advantage either way and my opponent resigns!  Very strange!

Maybe something came up unrelated to the game.

I suggest that a fairly common reason is that a person realizes that they are not going to have time to play that game well, and choose to resign rather than time out. I know that was the case in at least a few of my own games, but otherwise am just speculating.

Maybe the baby woke up.

Didn't wish to name my opponent, obviously, but some have visited my site and opponent is obvious. I had not realised that he'd also resigned a game with me in which no moves had been played. I see this now and that he has also resigned other games without making a move. It seems strongly possible that the cause is other than chess. We now all have concerns as to his welfare.

lawrence1950

welfare, maybe, but we all live busy lives and sometimes chess has to take a back seat to Life. My only timeouts happened because I was travelling with my significant other and either had no internet connection or when I did I had no opportunity.... (actually, not competely true, one time out was simply forgetting to play before it was too late!)

Sometimes people decide chess just isn't their game after all.

I had an opponent resign a live game yesterday in that was materially even and he was the only one with any possible attacking opportunities, though it was a dull boring closed position and I was thinking to offer a draw, but didn't get around to it before he suddenly resigned.  Engine certainly gave him a slight edge in the final position, although we also both played terribly - I had a 28% accuracy apparently, he had 40.7%.

some do it to take or keep their rating down.

"I had an opponent resign a live game yesterday in that was materially even and he was the only one with any possible attacking opportunities, though it was a dull boring closed position" = when adrenaline junkies play chess?...

Very strange? It’s really none of your business why they resigned and why would you make a post about it?
lawrence1950

Answering just for myself, curiosity! I am fairly new here (joined in Feb this year), and I, too, have wondered why opponents have resigned from games that were relatively even at the time. None of our business, I guess, but harmless speculation?

Sandbagging is a bit harsh happy.png. I myself would have resigned rather than timeout if it had been possible, because having timeouts on your records excludes you from some tournaments...

This may have been what just happened to me… just discovered that I just lost a game due to my resig, when I never resigned!!  After searching, apparently this is some sort of bug where a game will resign someone out if the connection glitches. It was a 3 day game, 8 moves in, and I had plenty of time left. I hope they fix this bug.

The guy was probably a sandbagger...no other reason to just abruptly resign from multiple games like that (and it was reported by another that it wasn't just the one game against 55North that the opponent mysteriously resigned...)
