yOU HAVE TO ATTEND TOURNAMENTS
very high rated, not titled players
Covid has changed many aspects of daily life, including chess. In 2018, I argued that it was almost impossible for a player to reach the top of the ratings lists without OTB chess.
Since Covid, there has been an explosion of serious online events and there have been quite a few players who have risen to the top without much OTB chess. That large number is dozens, not hundreds of players. In general, an unknown player in the top echelons of online sites is still most likely to be an anonymous titled account or silicon enhanced. But there are quite a few legitimate exceptions now.

Some titles need just elo requirements. Like FM (2300) or CM (2200). However besides getting the elo for IM and GM you also need to score at a high level in 3 separate events.
Most people know how that works, so I don't think there is much need to list all that here. There is always wikipedia if someone wants to look that up.
As someone has pointed out a lot of the very high elo accounts are probably anonymous accounts of some top GMs of the world.
However I do wonder if FM and CM titles are auto given or does the person who is getting those titles have to accept those titles as well.
Ig you need a fide rating for that

Don't reply to 6 year old posts, please. Especially if you have nothing new to add.
Do bear in mind as well there are young prodigy players who may simply have not played enough OTB to have a title yet - especially with Covid…
It is possible a 2100-2200 OTB rated player owns 2700 blitz. I am unrated, but I am 2000 here. Some guys just love chess too much.
That's a great myth. There have been works of fiction about such players. But in reality, a player needs to compete against other extremely strong *human* opponents in order to learn how to win against humans. There is no substitution for OTB competition.
Having said that, there are probably quite a few GMs who have anonymous accounts here.
You realize chess com is the perfect place for that right? I haven't done it yet and I'm 2200 it's just less common to not do it and be good

I'm betting that OTB rated players will become more rare, in the future.
Playing chess online is just too fun and too convenient, these days. There isn't really too much motivation to play OTB, for a lot of players.
In the old days, you played OTB because that was essentially the only way to earn a rating. Now you can earn an online rating in minutes, and play from the comfort of your home.
Sure, online ratings aren't official, but it's the same kind of motivation. They're just numbers, to know where you stand in a certain player pool ...

Chess books are very accessible too. Self-learn is possible just like what I did. And I will keep on doing it.
