What are the requirements to become a CM?

Sort:

Hello!

I have been trying to find out how people become CMs (Candidate Masters), and I couldn't find the requirements anywhere.  Does anyone know?  I know how norms and ratings work for GMs and IMs, but couldn't find anything on CMs.

you have to have an over the board FIDE rating of 2200 and you have to pay about £50 for it.

Thank you!

USCF is 2000- 2199 expert level and fide is 2200. Anyone who can get at 2000 uscf or 2000 fide deserved respect, its extremely difficult to get such a rating. I think fide is ridiculous, a 2200 elo is master level, eventually a player at 2200 fide drop below 2200 elo and he really was an expert; you rarely meet a CM rated above 2200 fide for a long time. When I meet a 2000 fide, for me he is an expert.

If you are talking about FIDE titles, then for CM you just have to have a rating of 2200, and for FM a rating of 2300. No norms or anything. I'm not sure about the USCF titles, I only know that you need 2200 for the NM title.

The best and easiest way to win it is by winning any age-category world championships!

What is the use of  having CM title with a low rating, there respect gaining it by beat strong players and being rated 2200 fide. If I was a junior will I reject the title and I was 1980 fide, I played a IM rated 2050 fide I give him no respect, I beat him one and he beat me, if it was a real IM strength I lose both games.

In womens chess I see WCM's rated 1400

But that's the same thing- that's not the actual requirement, they just punched above their weight once. I'm sure there is similar examples in men's chess.

Very sad, 1400 there not much fear from such a low rating. In my chess club everyone and children want to play against the experts and hopefully beat one.

Will such a junior CM keep his/her title for many years? Could that explain low rating today? I encountered a CM rated 1576:  https://www.chess.com/member/simeontodev

No reason to disrespect a person who, let's say, haven't played chess the last 20 years, but the title is a bit confusing with that kind of rating.

There is a Singaporean WCM rated 1100- she got top 2 for some U-12 national tournament

Elo is the name of one of the first rating systems, named after Arpad Elo. I believe the rating system used by FIDE is a variation of that, but would have to double-check.

In your charts, the 2200 rating for CM is FIDE rating.
