But that's the same thing- that's not the actual requirement, they just punched above their weight once. I'm sure there is similar examples in men's chess.

nope, never really have seen a low rated CM....... but I have seen a 2600 IM

WCM = Untitled Player

no she is "CM" not WCM

Kinda tough that chess is a pay-to-win kind of sport. What I mean by this is how you have to pay for a norm. It would be nice if they were just given once you reach a certain rating or win/perform well in a certain tournament.

The amount you pay is insignificant. Like if you've dedicated thousands of hours to the game of chess, you're not going to let a $50 tournament entry fee stop you from getting your norm.

Besides, a lot of tournaments give free entry to FMs, IMs and GMs. So it literally costs you nothing to join, once you reach that level. Just your time.

Before FIDE awards the title of Grandmaster to a chess player, the chess player must have an ELO score of at least 2500 at some point and three favorable results (called norms) in tournaments in which other Grandmasters participate, some of which They have to be from countries other than the player. There are also other milestones that a chess player can achieve to reach the title, such as winning the World Junior Championship.

To become an International Master (IM) The conditions are similar to those of GM, but less demanding. The minimum score for the IM title is 2400.

To qualify for a FIDE Master (FM) title, a player must achieve a FIDE score of 2300 or higher.

Master Candidate (CM) is similar to FM, but with a FIDE rating of at least 2200.

Winning youth championships brings the requirement down 200 points, otherwise it's 2200 FIDE.

There's a guy at my local chess club who's a CM despite never reaching 1800+ rating in his life. I don't think he was ever a U10 world champion or anything special like that. He mentioned something about playing a zonal tournament and getting the CM title from that.

Does anyone know how these zonal tournaments work?

Pawn_hurricane_099

Nope!

BTW, anyone knows how to get a uscf rating?

And what is is that anyways? Same as fide and elo?

You get a US Chess rating by playing in US Chess rated events. US Chess if the official chess organization of the United States and has it's own rating system awards an NM title for OTB regular rated play.

So if you want to become a GM or any other master you have to have a uscf rating?

To become an NM(national master) you need a USCF rating yes. But to become a GM requires a FIDE rating, not USCF

GrandMasterNoob21

I'm hoping to get NM (2200 USCF) by my birthday in 2022.

GrandMasterNoob21

My OTB is 961, online USCF is 1840.

Ya gotta work on that OTB

My USCF is 2050 something and my CFC is 2100 something

It is quite hard to surpass 2200 as my highest is 2180 and then I fell down again sad.png

GrandMasterNoob21

When you've have played only 3 tournaments... you can't really work it.
