What to do against Pawn storms?

Sort:

Recently, I've been playing a lot of bullet. Pawn storms happen very frequently, usually toward my castled king. Most of the time, I'll try to counterattack on the other side. However, it's proven ineffective (or maybe Im just bad xd) Is there any good way to fend off a pawn storm?

Pay attention for when you have to push a pawn in front of your king to blockade it, (however temporarily)
Unfortunately it can be a difficult decision sometimes on which one to do,

But generally, if you push your pawns before them, you’ll be able to attack before them

But I mean it’s bullet though, half the time they’ll just blunder checkmate in one

Use your pieces actively to challenge the pawns. Knights and bishops are particularly effective at targeting weak pawns and controlling key squares.

When both you and your opponent castle opposite ways, the best way to counter a pawn storm is to...do one of your own before your opponent does.

However, if your opponent gets the first strike, there are two things you can do:

1. Stop the pawns, no matter what. (But don't cripple your position to do it.)

Obviously, if those pawns get all the way down, your king is going to wind up being very exposed, and you're going to be in big trouble. However, you should try to avoid sacrifices.

2. Sneak in your own attack.

This is generally the better idea. It's good to have great defense, but playing too defensively is a good way to end up taking an L. Get your pieces working together to threaten dangerous moves that demand your opponent's immediate attention.

Even if your threats don't lead to checkmate, try to at least take out their pieces. After all, it doesn't matter how vulnerable your king is if there's nothing to attack it.

1) Be faster with your own storming pawns.

2) Castle with your king on the opposite wing, away from the attack.

3) Try to push your defensive pawns past the opponent's, so that the position on the flank becomes blocked, so no open attacking files.

Countering in the center is another idea.
