I believe RNA is asking if 2500 is already thorough with chess understanding, why a 2700 beats him 6-0 !? What's is that he's still lacking ? Isn't it? I have my opinion that chess is more of an art than science...(hence the famous quote that one who says he understands chess, understands nothing)...super GMs were once GMs ...with time and effort they have developed a far more deeper intutioin of the game...and yet they too find themselves at end of their wits when playing a 3000 rated supercomputer...and then the supercomputer also lost to the artificial intelligence (Alfa zero ... isn't it?). So it all boils down to the fact that chess is an ocean... everyone is trying to scale it's depth...those who stand at top are super GMs and they too haven't seen the bottom yet. (GMs are trailing right behind and with right efforts they are soon to attain a super GM strength ...mirrored in their ELO ratings)

Ok, I will put an end to this discussion. Super GMs lost their parents as children, usually killed by a criminal. Then they grew up, trained with a professor or were biten by an insect with superpowers and became super GMs. They go out at night in disguise fighting criminals. A regular GM take his shoes off, open a beer, choose his favourite armchair and watch football on tv. Hope my answer is helpful.
Chuck Norris would make quick work of a GM, but not a super GM.
A Super GM, has the rating of 2600 or better. Usually they have ratings of 2650-2800 for serious competition.
To name a few they could be Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Wesly So, Alexander Grischuk, Vishy Anand.
The Super GM's are the GM's that are seen to have a higher chance of beating the world champion. They are also the leaders of the Chess and are in the top 10 and top 100 charts for best chess players in the world.
The main difference is Super GM's are better than GM's, and GM's have a less likely chance to beat the world champion than Super GM's however the chances are there.
Also another main difference is that the Super GM's are the ones who are mostlikely going to be in the candidate tournaments for the battle against the world chess champion, who currently is Magnus Carlsen as many know.
There are a ton of differences but the main one is knowing that Super GM's are just better in most ways than GM's, but in that title they also study more, and go through a lot of tourmoil in the game due to their longer tougher classical games wih other Super GM's and massive amount of time they have to study, prepare and play to get to the highest level of play in their tournaments to win and claim the prizes of moneny and most of all the hope to play the world champion and beat him to claim to be the new world champion in chess.
That is the main differences and backstory.
FIDE offers a GM title but the SGM (super GM) title is only one that exists in the imagination of Magnus fanatics.
