morphy in the same circumstances, with the same technology, same evolution of chess, same tools, same history of masters play to study, would defeat magnus, though I think it would be on helluva match

Your statement does not say that Morphy was a better chess player than Carlsen but perhaps more talented, so it has nothing do to with this thread.

my humble apologies. I should have known better than to post in the same thread as your eminence

GodsPawn2016

Magnus Morphy is better than Paul Carlsen.

Ridiculous thread ... Of course Magnus would beat a straight-up Morphy of 1862. However, I think Morphy would probably win if he was given 10 minutes to prepare.

Settle down Mexico or we'll have to burn Santa Anna's wooden leg.

I haven't met too many people who know about Santa Anna's difficutlies, including his prosthesis.  Nice to meet you.

Israel is genocidal mob and army for fun, play the heck of others into bones.

Killing other races for fun

If Magnus lived in Morphy's day, Morphy would soundly beat him. If Morphy lived today, he would probably be an astrophysicist and rarely play chess.

IcyAvaleigh

They are exactly equal

Morphy. Americans are undefeated in World Wars.   What the hell has Norway ever done?

Google "Norway Heavy Water" and you might learn WHY the Americans ended up on the winning side.

They are both great. Morphy would easily be top 5 today imho.

It is very creative to think who is better, but, it is stupid simple to choose one of them.

Imagine this picture: Leonardo da Vici in his forties, today with laptop and internet for one or six months. What would he able to make?

Next: who is better singer Enrico Caruso, Mario Lanza or Pavarotti? All dead, but with some covered time.

At the end: who is better leader: Julius Caesar or Adolf Hitler?

As you see, we have to think a little bit wider?

You can't compare two people that did not compete in the same time period because not only was their training material different, in the sense that Carlsen can look over old Morphy games to see why he did what he did and learn from that, while Morphy cannot look over Carlsen games because Carlsen was not even a thought back then, let alone playing at such a high level.  One kid living in poverty with a certain way of perceiving things could have had surpassed Carlsen and Morphy if (s)he had the right upbringing and formal training, but then again (s)he did not, so that individual will never be the world champion, let alone hold a grandmaster title.

btw paul morphy was richhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

you would need a time machine to figure it out, take a young Carlsen back in time without the computational advantage of the modern era and when the chess theory was different and see how he would adapt, or take young morphy and let him practice play stockfish 11 when he's 11

maybe an interesting screenplay bro

morphy was GREAT we learn from his games and magnus carlsen learned from his games

dude carlsen learnt from morphy and so did the other players we learnt literally everything from morphy so you cant change the truth if you ask magnus himself then he would reply the same

Carlsen is better than morphy in chess, (Every generation of chess players is improving) But morphy is more important as in that time, They had to make their OWN strategies and they were so good without all the chess training we have today.
