Why did my chess rating drop so drastically?

Sort:
drgreken

I had this problem where I had progressed to the high 1300s and after that after playing a few games and losing all of them consecutively due to blunders, I when to sleep thinking it is just a bad coincidence or because I am tired. However when I played some rapid games the next day, the same thing happened all over again. Now my rating has dropped all the way back to 1290. Even though I play tactics puzzles and play long time controls, it seems like I have hit a wall and just can't progress anymore and I sort of become short tempered . Does everyone experience this type of thing? If so, can you give me some advice or tips to get out of this? I will really appreciate it happy.png

Dont bother yourself with online rating. The truth is if you reached certain rating and dropped, its not a big deal and you will eventually come back. Best advice I can give you is take a break if you find yourself in a losing streak. Think twice about your move before you make it and you should be fine.

Same boat as my rating tells it all . Honestly couldn't tell you .

You only joined a month ago. It's not like your rating was in the high 1300's for months or years.

As you can see from the graph, your rating fluctuated a lot in the last month. That is normal.  If you play here for years, you will probably see repeated periods of ups and downs. I suppose the point is to keep the trend slanted upward.

Wow,thanks for everyone's insight so far, you really helped me out. I really appreciate all your help, and hope you all have a great day!

it's completely normal for your rating to fall under your peak, else it wouldn't be a peak you know?

Now, that is a very valid point I had not considered at all!

Btw you written "it seems like I have hit a wall and just can't progress anymore"

I remember that is exactlly what i was thinking when I was around 1300. And in time I gained +200 point just by playing and doing puzzles. And I think I will gain +200 in the same fashion.

Conclusion: It happens slow, accept it and dont worry about it.

you should be taking stock of how many good moves you played, because they don't always mean you winning the game but they tell you how much more of the game you played correctly and you should be building on that. ratings are a representation of your play i know but good consistent play translates to rating eventually and not the other way around. you should be worried if the quality of your moves dropped significantly since that would determine the trajectory of your chess in the long run, so that even as you are winning while playing poorly and inconsistently and gaining rating points in the process, it should soon reverse itself and then some.

The same thing happened to me I had finally reached 600 then I dropped down to 500 in an hour

I am diving from 850s to sub 700s and I don't know why I am tanking so hard lately. I assume it's because my strategy and style has become stale. I feel I need to focus on puzzles more and perhaps do some new midgame practice and endgame practice. This is my worst drop though and all in like 10 days....

Hello People

siddirocks

Sounds like a classic tilt. Probably every player has experienced it.

It's normal and will go away on its own. Take a break for a day or two.

Max123thechessplayer

ngl it also happened to me

Max123thechessplayer

dropped from 900 to 725 in just a few weeks

Max123thechessplayer

at least im slowly recovering, thanks for the insight

I was getting close to a 900 for a while there and out of nowhere I dropped down into the low 700's for a while. I recognize that I am a tilted player and to adjust for that I gave myself breaks to cool down but with that comes the lack of repetition and I don't retain things well. I am an instinctive player and it limits me unless I am relentless with reps. I would suggest playing the a.i. more and doing puzzles to cool off from playing others when you sense your frustration setting in. It's normal I think and all part of the growth, our ratings rise to where they are going to be relatively fast and then we refine those skills over years of reps. Good luck brother!

Try playing music while playing chess. It will not help you get back your lost elo but it will give you enjoyment whenever you are bored playing. When it is still not helping, try to watch Computer Chess Championship and guess all of the moves of one of the engines. It is very hard and challenging but it will give you a nice spice of life.
