That's about normal. Chess.com ratings are a bit inflated, the best players are 3300+ on chess.com.

There's a few problems that I face:

1. You aren't looking directly over the board in OTB, not to mention there's nothing stopping you from playing a move (other than the consequences of doing it), so your awareness of the board may be inherently stunted.

2. You have to manually pick up and move the pieces (and, obviously, can't premove), which makes time trouble much more of an issue. The touch-move rule doesn't help (assuming you're playing a formal game).

3. The king and queen look way too similar. Maybe it's just me, but I find them easy to confuse.

This. I can't find it right now, but there have been some threads collecting data, and I believe it suggested people's chess.com ratings are, on average, about 200 points higher than their fide ratings. (Lichess ratings, are, in turn, something like 150 points higher still).

Offline games can feel more serious due to the physical presence of your opponent and the competitive atmosphere.

I play better in real life maybe because I see my opponents stress

Chess is a visual game. So 3D can be tricky, especially in short time controls. Bishops sometimes look a like pawns with bad sets. Not enough light can be an issue too...

So this is why Magnus is 400 points lower rated in OTB than on chess.com?

ChatGPT fails again.

He says "offline" which mean OTB, I think.

Because in OTB chess you need to choose your own moves.

KnightWhoSaysNih

I'm the opposite.

I'm better OTB than I am online

That's what I say.

Chess.com ratings are higher for every player than OTB ratings. That has absolutely nothing to do with the "competitive atmosphere" and such nonsense, otherwise it would affect different players very differently. What ChatGPTOfficial said is just complete nonsense.

A lot inflated. There's a big difference between 1700 and 2000 when measured by the numbers of players achieving it. Much more difference than between 1400 and 1700.

How do you know the exact distribution of ratings on chess.com?
