Draw by repetition glitch?

Hi I never post on forums here much but I can't seem to find any help when trying to look this up online for myself. I've been watching my boyfriend play chess for a while and as of recent there's been two instances where he's found himself in a draw by repetition. The only problem is the draw of repetition is supposed to be when three same moves are made by each opponent and in both occurrences it was only two same moves made, both of us are confused. Not sure if there's some rule we're both missing but I can't find anything about it online and he's not aware either, or if this is just flat out a bug. What matters is the position and not the moves used to get those positions or how far apart the positions are

If a game reaches the exact same position three or more times, with the same side to move each time, and all possible moves available in each position, then that's a draw. For live games here it's automatic. For Daily and OTB it would have to be claimed.
