ELO rating

Hi there, I'm pretty new to the site (and to chess too). I've been playing unrated for a while and this morning I wanted to try the 'thrill' of a normal, rated game. As a newbie, my rating was 1200; but after I beat my opponent, whose rating was 1224, I got +187!!! I'm not very into how it works, but I'm sure there must be an error >_> How can I have 1387 points after a single game against a guy who only had 24 points more than me?

Thanks in advance for explaining me ^^

P.s. please forgive my English, I'm not a native speaker ^^"

And it's actually a glicko rating, not an elo rating.

Ow, thanks for the correction. And for the news. But does this mean that losing the game I would have lost about 150 points??

Hmm, assuming you had a ratings deviation of 350, he would of needed an RD of 60 for you to gain 187 points. With those RD's a loss would have dropped your rating 164 points. If your RD dropped to 175 that would change to +73/-64. Assuming I am using the same constants as chess.com.

remember, chess.com does'nt know how good player are you..!! so, at first ( i mean, in several games in the beginning ) , your ratings will swing a lot... but afterwards, they change very slowly even if you win agains a player, whose rating is far better than you.. chess.com is very scientific, you know..
