Game move alerts failing?

Sort:
drawfour

Hey guys,

Recently I joined and got a friend to join.  We've started a game, and we have the "alert me when it is my move, I am running out of time, or I receive a challenge." option turned on, but we are not getting "it's your turn" emails.

I definitely got the emails indicating an incoming challenge, and I believe I also got a "game declined" email (we both challenged each other, but decided on just one game).  So I wouldn't think it's a spam filter somehow trashing it (and I've checked my spam folders to be sure).

Is there some option we're missing?

yes. just go to your ACCOUNT tab and then manage your alerts. as for not receiving emails? well, they ARE being sent, but these days so much good email is being marked as spam. please add "[email protected]" to your safe list!

I think there is a an option for switching off email alerts and only having alerts on the server.  Maybe you did this?

I have "Messages", "Notes", "Comments", "Tracking", and "Online Chess" all enabled under "Edit Alert Settings".  I also have "Also send alerts to my default contact email address".

The alerts are all enabled, and selected to be sent.  I received an email indicating that I had new comments to read on this thread, so messages from [email protected] are not being marked as spam.  However, I guess it's possible that something within a "move" alert is triggering the spam detector, so I'll add it to my safe list.

But I've not seen any messages appear in my "SPAM" folder, so this is why I wonder if the message for "Your move" is even being sent...

When you login often sometimes you may not get an alert when it is your move. The alerts come when you are offline for an extended period of time.

Yes, that's what I'm expecting.  I've tried closing the webpage, having my friend make a move, and still have not received the alert.  Also, when I've made moves in the past, I've verified that his status is "offline", which means the server definitely knows he's not signed in, and he still does not get the alerts.  Next, I'll try "signing out" specifically, and not just closing the web page.

Still, I've never seen a forum that doesn't send alerts (such as "new post to a thread you're watching") even if I'm currently logged in and browsing.  So I would expect that new forums posts, as well as email chess games, would still email me the alerts.

I've also tried signing out of the web page so that there's no way the server thought I was logged in.  I still don't get any move alerts.  In fact, I let my game go down to just 2 days left (10 day move period) and I still don't get any alerts.

Any other ideas?  I'm sure my email provider is not filtering the email as spam -- I receive forum post notifications and also game invites.

I am experiencing the same problem.  I was notified when an opponent accepted a game, but I have yet to receive an email when it is my turn.  I have checked my spam settings, etc, as well, and that does not seem to be the problem.

I wonder if it's a problem with new accounts only.

I was thinking the same thing.  I belong to other chess sites and my notifications always come through just fine, so I am sure it is not a spam problem.  I also double-checked by notification settings and they are correct too.  Maybe it takes the system a little time to fully register a new user?

Until this clears up, I better stick to a long time control in my games as I know I am going to forget to check for my opponent's move.  Embarassed

A suggestion:  we need more emoticons!  Some chess-related ones would be nice.Laughing

well, i get the notifications all of the time, so i know the mailer system is working. who is your email host?

Same problem here... I enabled all alerts and "send to defeault address" (gmail account) on Alerts settings page. So far I received new game alerts, draw offer alerts, and game ended alerts, but no move alerts. Nothing in spam folder. Btw my account is only couple of days old.

Well, the one common thread appears to be new user accounts.  Must be something with that.

Well, I'm not that new (june 2007) and I have the exact same problem. I have an hotmail.co.uk address, get all sorts of alerts, also for forums I'm checking, but never when it's my turn to move, and I always log out when I leave chess.com.

I sent the admins an email about the problem.  They said they're looking into it.  Hopefully it gets fixed soon. :)

That is good news.  I didn't think to email them because I thought they would be monitoring this forum for such issues.

Just wanted to update this issue:

Today, I did receive an email notice that I was challenged to a game, but I still have yet to get notified when it is my turn to move.

Is any progress being made on this issue?

drawfour
Same here.  I will ping them via email again to see if they have determined anything.  I have not heard back yet.  I'll reply here when I get an update.

That is very considerate of you.  Thank you!

Considering the Chess.com logo still has a "beta" label next to it, it is remarkable that this is the only problem I've encountered so far.  I hope they are close to ending the beta phase once they squish this bug.
