Hi Vijay,

Start reading the articles about chess, the ones for beginners (search in Articles, you'll find many). Play many games, learn from your mistakes. To become a grandmaster you need to play in "real" (not internet) tournaments a lot, improve rather dramatically and be a very very very good player...

I wish you success!

First, GMs don't write all in capital letters. Then second of all, unless you are a genius, starting to play at 39 years old, you don't have much chance to become a GM. Then you have to realise that talented people can spend their life trying to become GM and not achieve it. Then if you still think you can do it, you have to realise that it's gonna be several years of playing and training chess full-time before you can even think of becoming GM.

But I'd start with just learning the rules and playing a few games on chess.com to see if you like the game, maybe?

I think for someone just starting in chess to set their goal at becoming a GM is very unreasonable and likely to lead to failure, disappointment and maybe even giving up the game.  You must learn to stand before you walk, and to walk before you run............on the way to being a GM in chess there are also such "goals" to achieve. Maybe set your goal at becoming an 1800 player first? If you get there (many play all their life and don't) then you can set a higher goal like the NM title. The natural progression would then be FM, IM and only then GM. Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck !
