I did change it but it always reverts =(. As soon as I close the tab or reload the page all saved settings from the gear button go away.
Note the actual settings tab itself on the left bar, the settings seem to always save and stay that way. However, it's never actually reflected in the board.
I'm having the exact same problem. I have set up board and piece preferences in settings, they are saved and can be recalled, but as soon as I start a game (. with the bot) the display simply reverts to other/default settings.

The April bots use their own boards and pieces settings.
You can disable that under Settings > Themes by toggling Enable Special Themes to igf
Thanks! I don't know what 'April' bots are or what 'igf' means, but your suggestion worked by turning off the special themes toggle once I found it, exactly the opposite of what I would have expected given I want to use special themes. I'm brand new here so I suppose I'll eventually get the hang of using this website. So far I'm not finding it easy and straightforward to use and sure wish the game boards had better and larger graphics like the 3D game app I've been using.
I went to my settings and changed the board and piece appearance settings. However, once I go to "play" and start a game the board and overall look is still default.
If I check my settings again via the settings tab, the choices are just as I set them. However, the settings in the "play" area just by the board (the little gear button at the board corner) is always set to default even if I change them.
