I didn't abandon the game but I lost and my rating went down.

I’m so sick of this happening to me. It’s so demotivating, like what is the point of the network/server connection indicator if the app thinks the other person has disconnected not you.

And what p1sses me off even further is how after the game is abandoned it suddenly instantly reconnects and pops up saying your points have been deduced, and even shows the other player’s most recent move, which proves it wasn’t actually disconnected the whole time after all!

Deducting points is only what the app should do if someone disconnects deliberately, such as by quitting the app, switching off their internet in settings or by turning their router off.

Where the app knows that someone has been a) Misled by the app to believe that it’s their opponents turn and their opponent has abandoned the game, or b) Informed that their connected has been lost by the app, the app should allow people to choose to continue with the current game or restart without a penalty.

The current system is not fit for purpose and is completely absurd.

There's no way to determine a deliberate vs accidental disconnect so they are treated the same. If they didn't have any rating drop, when it happened and the game was abandoned, then people could just disconnect to avoid point loss.

The process will validate game state when the time runs out on the client, basically a refresh, so if you're disconnected and your opponent runs out of time, it can reconnect if the connection isn't fully down.

That said, if you're on the iOS app, there is a bug impacting some games in a couple of recent versions. Staff have pushed a fix that's available in version 4.7.17 of the app and that is rolling out now.
