Sometimes I want to set up a custom board where I can put pieces wherever I like without limitations but I am unable to find a way to do this on the app. Am I missing something or is this not a feature?
I don't think you can do it in the app. Go to safari and then search "chess.com". Then, log in, but do not go to the app or click "open". Then, it works like a computer and you can put pieces wherever you want! 
Ah, bummer. I was hoping there was a way to do it directly in the app without workarounds but I'm sad that's not the case. Anyway, thanks for the quick reply and confirmation that I'm not just missing something! I was searching everywhere in the app because it seems like it would be a fairly basic feature to include.
Play vs Computer mode with both players human and choose Custom under the Position option.
Many thanks from me too, Martin. I have been looking for something like this for days in other apps running on iOS devices, but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. This is absolutely fantastic! I set up a position from a diagram mentioned in one of Euwe's middle-game books, then played moves 16 to 31, which is where Euwe stops and says white will win easily. So at that point I changed the app setting from human vs human to computer vs computer, and let the engine show me how this is a won position for white (it was Aljechin - Euwe, 7th match, 1927). This is just awesome, and I'm going to sign up for an annual Diamond membership with Chess.com right away (great forums too, by the way)

i dont get it. the pieces arent there when you click play in computer
Go to menu
click on Computer-Choose-Custom
select TYPE
click another Custom left of TYPE
click on Custom Setup
Then you can setup the pieces from there
when done hit the check mark and then hit play
Your board will return after you hit play button

It depends which term is chosen. The yearly plan is billed for the full year and renewal at the end of the term; this one shows a lower monthly equivalent pricing but is paid in advance.
If monthly is chosen, then it renews every month.
