Scammers On Chess.com

I thought this wasn't real at first but apparently it is, scammers are now on Chess.com messaging people trying to scam anyone even me, I've tried reporting them multiple times under "other" but I don't see it working. See I watch a lot of scambaiting videos where they waste the person(s) time etc. I've learned that the scammers have scripts usually and try to follow them. One in particular I saw seemed to be just like that, they had some sort of script and they try to scam you no matter what the situation is. Seriously look out for scammers I know it sounds almost stupid because this is just a chess website but its happpening and imagine if I would have complied then it would have happened to me! Perfect example of one of the scammer who really didn't give up whose username is [public accusations not allowed -- MS] this scammer doesn't even have any games played and just attempts to scam anyone. I've reported the person 3 times, but I don't know if it will actually work. I don't even know the person and they said it was their birthday and that they turned 20 and wanted a "gift" of "$1,000" from me and my "WhatsApp number" (Obviously I didn't give them either) then trying to say it was for their 20th birthday present. None of it made any sense, "she" (I think the scammer was a guy) started acting like it was a script being read to try to scam me. Before I realized it, I actually sent a little award "Happy Birthday" because I thought it would make it stop and that maybe they aren't lying but sadly I was wrong. I told the person "I'm much older, disabled with epilepsy, I've had 5 seizures today already, and I'm broke." Plus I said to the person "that any money I get goes towards food." Chess is my only real hobby for the moment. Still asked me for money and even saying the amount, $1000, which is insane because when someone tells you they are disabled & broke plus they STILL ask for money? That's 100% wrong and an obvious scammer. Then when I said no the person tried to say how the person is a female, which was already made clear in the beginning anyway (What difference does it make?). At the end the scammer said they are from the United States but based in Ukraine it sounded like a complete lie. I took screenshots of the messages just in-case they need to be used because I am done with this type of stuff and wanted to reach out.

Anyone experience similar issues with players? Besides reporting them, how do I handle this if the reporting doesn't work and you can confirm it's a scammer? I figured this spot in the forums was the only other way.

If an admin wants proof I can provide it.

If you reported, then that's what you can do; that and block the member. If staff need additional information, they will contact you.

Hasn't happened to me

I know they have an urgent report system but it isn't violence so I didn't want to report him there. Just did it the normal way. I did block him. It's possible that the person was caught from reporting before because it being a new account (less than 30 days) is suspicious to me as well. With no games played at all. Nothing, no stats. [removed -- MS] Look for yourself. No rules against looking at someones profile

Publicly accusing other members is not allowed, regardless of if they have broken the TOS.

Martin did you as a Mod at least look to see in not just making this whole thing up? I’m mainly focusing on the Admins and Mods to get something done. Everyone else that reads this just stay informed that’s all or if you have an idea or a story to share I’d be glad to hear it. I’m just shocked… why this community you know?

Moderators do not have access to check that, so staff will have to.

Thank you Martin truly. This shows you guys care! Its like whack a mole. Whats funny is I noticed when typing in usernames. the same name came up with an extra 1 after it, I went to look at the page and it says it doesnt exist so maybe its been taken care of as well. Seriously though this gives me hope that you guys want to truly help and that means a lot to me personally. The original account was banned and rightfully so! We can keep lock this if you want or continue to hear stories.

omg... to be fair it is against the rules for you to help him like, but coaching is legal. He probably was serious hahahhahaha at least that should give you confidence that people know you are good. That guy could have still been a scammer too n not pay you obviously.

First I have a quick question for you, if you are truly 10 years old like it says in your bio why do you care? you dont have money and they wont be messaging you. Anyway okay then, imagine someone messages you and asks you for money and doesnt stop no matter what you say? They make a fake persona and everything including their age and where they live and all this stuff you dont even ask and they say "it's money for my birthday". They dont have any games played and the account is less than 30 days old. They friended you, joined your club come on man you can see where this goes. You have to remove them and block them and report them and this is to make sure nobody is actually scammed by this person and thankfully chess.com staff banned him. They must've saw even more compelling evidence because that ban they to gave the account was extremely fast. Thank you again and I compel others to do the same and share their stories if they have them. Maybe it will help catch afew more!
