is this a computer chess program like fritz or rybka or the (hard) computer here in chess.com?
Take back checkmate move on computer
I use the following:
--> Learn
--> Analysis
--> Set Up Position
--> choose your color as "White to move" or "Black to move" and configure the board in the way you would like to continue from
--> Load
--> Practice vs Computer (the dart board icon on the bottom right)
--> Change Bot (the robot head looking icon on the bottom right -- this is also optional)
Hope this helps!
I have the exact same issue.
It feels like chess.com really don't understand this since this issue has now existed for 10 years since this post.
It is VERY frustrating to not be able to go back one step because of an accidental checkmate that you just did not see. You cannot learn at all when that happens and it is very frustrating.
I agree, it is frustrating..especially when you play on you phone and swiping a piece goes wrong and it results in stalemate..there's no way to correct it..
Ah, you CAN play the computer with takebacks. When playing against the computer at chess.com, instead of choosing the "Challenge No help of any kind" option, you choose "Custom" and then turn on the takeback option.

Unfortunately no, this is the problem that OP 10 years ago complained about, that once it's checkmate/stalemate there can be no takeback. Enabling the Takeback option does not change it, no matter how or where the Takeback option is enabled. You can still not take takeback anything once the game ended. I just tested it and it does not work.
I too find it very frustrating, there's no reason that it shouldn't be possible. Im convinced that the original programming for the functionality must have overlooked this missing functionality, or glitch, and since then there have just simply not been anyone from the devs who fixed it for whatever reason that may be.
Ending a game vs a computer (or a person that agrees) on checkmate or draw is problematic. The last move of the game is no different than any of the previous moves. If one sets the rules this way one is declaring themselves to be directly against learning to play chess better. I can't emphasize this point enough. Experimentation is the key to learning, no allowing take-backs at every point in the game is contrary to learning the game and extremely frustrating. This far and no farther with no point to the declaration. This is contrary to what the site should be about. as a last note if there is such an option it should be on by default; those who don't want that can then turn it off.
Surely someone has looked at this from chess.com now? Why wouldn't they resolve this; from a software standpoint it is a very simple patch to implement. This just stinks of complete incompetence from chess.com. Which is why I refrain from purchasing any of their premium products, if they can't get the simple stuff right then how awful must the 'premium' features be? That, and the pure greed wanting to charge you for a full year at a time and hugely inflating the price to extort you if you wish to pay monthly. Charlatans.
When I play the computer on hard on my personal computer, I can't take back the move when the computer checkmates me. For instance, I was playing a close game with the computer and I didn't see the checkmate, and I couldn't take back the move and continue playing. The only option is to start a new game. Can anyone help me?
