Why am I facing so many players that are MUCH stronger than their rating?

Over the last 3-4 days my rating on rapid has plummeted from 1930 way down to 1730. At first, I thought I was simply tired and playing badly. Maybe I am a bit out of form, but below I will list the details and analysis of the last ten games I have lost. I am losing virtually every game I play, and in most cases my opponent has dominated from the very outset.

Opponents "supposed" rating / their accuracy / their estimated rating based on their play

1730 (94%!) 2400!

1894 (86%) 2100.

1813 (82%) 1900

1736 (77%) 1750

1745 (91%) 2250

1746 (78%) 1800

1775 (90%) 2250

1791 (97%!) 2550

1767 (74%) 1700 (wow, actually lower)

1825 (78%) 1850.

So, the average rating of these opponents who beat me is supposed to be 1782.

But their performance, on average, is 2055 rating.

What is going on?  Is this extremely bad luck? Am I being penalized in some way? Should I report these guys? Have the ratings suddenly changed?

I will be honest, I am paying for this site and I always check the analysis and the recent set of opponents is very odd.

It is not much fun losing all the time

The performance ratings should be taken with a very big grain of salt. They are based on a combination of player ratings and accuracy.

In your other topic, I mentioned I recently played in an OTB tournament in a section that was U1600. Here are mine and my opponent's performance rating according to the review

  • 1650 with black vs 1350 as white (sub-900 player)
  • 1900 with white vs 1600 as black (sub-1300 player)
  • 1550 with black vs 1600 as white (sub-1400 player)
  • 1950 with white vs 2100 as black (sub-1200 player)
  • 1300 with black vs 1350 as white (sub-900 player)

I can't say you're just in tilt, but looking at your overall rating history, it looks like you may have been at or close to a peak. Variations in ratings, along with a rating drop, are not uncommon.

I had been holding steady in the 1500-1600 range for years and over the last year have dropped to my floor of 1400. I haven't been playing as much as I should but in general don't feel I'm playing any worse than normally. It happens.

Try setting up the rating range.

My understanding is that there's a lower rating limit where the seek ranges aren't honored as it would be harder to find pairings. Though I would not expect you to be paired with a 2000+ rated player.

Another one. Supposedly 1700 rating and they just played 96.2% in the Benko Gambit half accepted modern variation! (i.e. one of the strongest lines against the benko). I have been playing on this site for years and normally players around 2000 know this kind of stuff. 17 very good moves

What is going on? Is there some kind of list of dubious players, and I am facing them?

I am close to canceling my membership and shutting down my account.

ChrisZifo

And now I just had a 1697 player who destroyed me with 93.9% accuracy using a kind of fiancetto defense against the benoni. They played 21 high quality moves in 1min and 13 seconds.

getting a bit tired of this. Really dont think this is normal. Been using this site for years and suddenly all these machine like players

I_AM_WINNER_SP

No just set up the rating range follow this first to to settings. next go to live.when you go there you can setup the rating range if you have any questions tell me. Okay

I_AM_WINNER_SP

I'm done with this website.

I'm not the best chess player but the rankings are ridiculous.

Some of my last few games:

Ranking, Played at score

851, 1250

960, 1300

870, 1450

910, 1300

Are you playing Blitz? I have noticed that Blitz and Bullet players are MUCH higher rated in the analysis (usually, not always) than their actual rating on this site. Usually a 200-300 point gap, as you are describing.

On Daily, well that is weird because players can use the Book Explorer and basically cheat their way through the opening.

On rapid, (10-0 and 15-10) the player ratings and after game ratings are actually VERY CLOSE

TradingUp

I'm not at the same level as you. However I am noticing a trend in the last week or two of players playing exceptionally well for my rating. I am in the 600-700 range and have been improving steadily. I am LOSING games against 600s while playing to 1200-1450 level myself.
It's quite wild.

falcon39

All this is funny because half the time I am playing like a "1700"
Ok so this game review rating is mainly based on accuracy. The thing is, its easier to get a really good accuracy against someone with low accuracy, so the average accuracy of games doesn't really increase much up until a really high level. To cancel this they also add your current rating, but not exactly because even low rated players can get a 2000+ performance rating.
In a short game where someone made an opening blunder, the other person can easily get 95% accuracy and get a rating 500--1000+ points higher...
In a calm game without many tactics, its easy to get 85+ accuracy and get a rating also about 300-500 higher.

TradingUp

Sure.
But when you are playing against a 500-700 player you aren't really expecting to run into perfectly played Gambits with no piece giveaway, players setting up forks or pins with piece sacrifices or multiple great moves played within a 5-10 move stretch from a slightly losing position.

I even spoke to a player that showed he was a 561 rated player in chat, who said he wasn't 561 but 897 which I found quite interesting.
It's very easy to dismiss. But when you are playing multiple people at a certain rating you get a feel for what they should play like, and 1 out of 5 games I'm running into a quality that is significantly different than the rest.
