True.
Letting time run out vs resigning
Not a lag, I was new to chess.com and looked through the posts before starting a new thread. This one seemed relevant so I posted here.
capnpaco nailed it, basically saying online chess requires some controls not needed n OTB play to make it enjoyable for us who actually want to play. The thing is chess.com is not doing enough to discourage jerks. They say that repeated bad behavior will result in sanctions but we still have a lot of bad behavior so we need something more immediate. We need an optional move clock and/or a presence check as suggested by Mattymar.
Shoudn't timing out be counted as a loss, otherwise any one losing a game could just abandon it and not lose any points. Have I uncovered a loophole in the scoring? I usually play 3 day games and many were abandoned after a few moves
No, it doesn't.

i only have a basic account, so idk if this changes based on account upgrades -- but at least on lichess, you can add 15 seconds to your opponent's clock. i know this may be counter to the point anyone here is trying to convey, but when my oponent is stalling for 4 minutes in a 5 minute game, or something, i tend to wait until he has 5 seconds or so, and then i just spam the +15 seconds button. i've found a number of times that the guy on the other end may wait a minute or so, and then make a move which is obviously losing. even better, on occasion, is when people start getting hella mad in the chat box, and then disconnect.
but i mean, i just don't mind waiting, if i know some jerk on the other end is going to have his time wasted more than mine.
Well I just finished a game where I was playing on Lichess and is was 30+0 time control and dude quit moving with 25 minutes left on the clock. Wtf
I was black in this 30-minute game and with 23 minutes left on his clock my opponent says he'll be back in 20 minutes. I suppose this qualifies and if the mods see this hopefully they'll check the server records and take action against him. It is pretty annoying because I can't open up another browser tab of Chess.com while I'm waiting.
This is unbelievable! Staff member kohai states in post #4 that "players should not stall to make opponents wait unnecessarily". I agree that this is rude and obnoxious and players shouldn't do it. But there is no accurate way to determine if a player is stalling or just thinking. That's what the clock is for..... Duh! If chess.com wants players to move faster, simply recommend shorter time controls. They should not penalize players they think are stalling, when in fact they may just be thinking. It's in the very nature of the game that players occasionally take a long time to make a move. If it happens to be a player's last move, because his clock runs out, so be it. The other player should just be happy with the win and quit griping because he had to wait...... I believe this website's engineers are well-meaning, but this technological attempt to regulate human behavior is ridiculous.
You can tell the difference, at least in some cases. When someone stalls a game with 10 advantage to their opponent on move 11 with 27 minutes left on the clock...yeah, they were stalling the game, not "thinking".
I just had somebody do this to me in a 24 hr minimum move correspondence game on here. It was hard fought and I got all the way to the and it was pretty much over... Annnnnnnnnnnddd he just never made another move abd after 24 hours without a move from him it declared me winner, but im not okay with that. I have OCD and so I cant enjoy that win. Really upset about it but that comes with the territory of online chess chess.I suppose. He took his toys and went home instead of either playing it out or resigning like someone with dignity. I gotta say I am really pissed over this..
On live chess, why do some players who find themselves down on pieces or position or both let time run with no moves vs resigning?
Nobody ever won a game by resigning.
That´s why I never play longer than 10 min matches.
Happens to me heaps on 10min games, up in position and they let it run for 5min
download a chrome extension game like ice dodo or tetris and play that while your opponent's time runs out

¨they will not be able to create or accept open challenges untill they play more games that follow the fair play policy¨
how will they be able to prove themselves if they cant play???

Playing friends, as mentioned in the post you quoted. Or wait out the time for the next game.
Letting the time run out or disconnecting intentionally is what some poor sports do to leave the opponent sitting there when they could be doing something else. This is called "stalling"in live chess. In daily chess it is called "vacation abuse." You can find information about it here (https://support.chess.com/article/675-what-is-stalling) or here (https://support.chess.com/article/639-what-is-vacation-abuse). It is a complete waste of time like shown above but you can report it.
