poor sport players

ive run into a lot of players who will just let the game sit once they know they have lost. then you have to either wait out the rest of their time or resign and lose rating. is there anything that can be done about this? even if its reporting the other player somehow? waiting 6 minutes of nothing during my limited time to play is awful

Play 10 minutes games. I wait less than 4 minutes. I check Instagram or watch youtube while waiting.

I run into it more and more. And I play mostly 10 min games. It is disrespectful and cowardly. Two clicks to resign, and move on...it is not difficult...they are just pissy and immature. I would love a filter for my pairings to avoid anyone with losses >= 10% by timeout

If you play a good sport and a good match, send a friend request. Easy to challenge him next day or future.

Except I usually just change my music or something. I check in every now and then to see if they return to the game. If they don't move for a while and I'm done calculating, then I will often times just look through my music to play for my next game. happy.png

Maybe <10% timeouts is not the right metric you're looking for - because some people are simply bad with time management, play too slow, lose on time too often...

It would be good to have another metric - disconnectors and/or time wasters in clearly losing positions. I'm sure it's possible to program - and then match such people with each other and leave the rest of us be.

I am currently playing one of these people, we are in a daily game 3 days per move and he was playing just fine until we reached a position where he only has 2 legal moves both of them lead to instant mate, and now he will not move so I guess I have to wait 3 days for him to lose on time. These people are really lame, I guess their fragile ego just can not accept the fact they were beaten by a better player!

When I play connect 4, I almost always play this rage quitter. I tell him no one likes a rage quitter.

"Rage quitter" haha!  I don't mind the folks who play slow or lose based on timing out. I do that too! It is those darn rage quitters.

Awesome idea 👏 .

You could always just take their poor sportsmanship as a compliment to you and your gameplay. I'll comment something like, "unique strategy" or "letting the anticipation build up, I like your style!" People that stall out have control issues. They've lost control of the game so it's an attempt to control you by your anger. When you show them that you're not angry, then they lose control of that and will usually move on shortly after.

I expect a 10 minute game to last 20 minutes and so it isn't an issue. If someone does this I just enjoy the winning feeling.

EnragedSanta

I agree that it is rude but it's all in all a pretty minor issue. If it really bothers you, just do something else while you're waiting.

Here's my biggest beef. I played someone where we reached this position and it was HIS MOVE and instead of taking the pawn like a normal person he makes some random rook moves and drags out the game needlessly another 5 or 10 moves or so. This makes me way more mad than people who disconnect. At least if they disconnect I can go off and do something else while I'm waiting.

I find typing bad chess/bad manners in the chat box often brings a quick resolution to the problem.

As your rating improves, so does the competition - so whatever your long term rating you can count on losing half your games on average.  I just enjoy playing, so resigning against a poor sport who is stalling, and temporarily losing a few points is no big deal - I’ll get the points back soon, and I get to immediately start a new game and actually play, instead of waiting and waiting and waiting.  And if that gives a poor sport a few points - who cares?  He or she will lose them again shortly anyway.

I just played against a player called evilinside2020. He was in complete losing position when he started to drag time. I thought allright, I just switch away and browse internet for little bit. I checked back every minute or so. He was still thinking or "thinking" is more appropriate to say. I switched away again, and now when I switched back, I saw a loss registered for me!? Just want to get clear here on the situation what might have happened, to avoid it later on. Was I away more the 120 seconds and got auto-resigned? I played the game on Android tablet.

In one of my games, it was a 60 minute game and I had a mate in one and the person just didn't move for about 30 minutes.

It could be that you stayed away too long, but I also had a weird situation once where my opponent moved but on my screen his clock was ticking and he hadn't moved.  When his clock ran out, all of a sudden his knight moved and the pop up said I lost on time!!!

I made a thread about it, and the consensus was that it was a connection problem, not cheating, but it was weird.
