white to checkmate in one. white is on bottom. black on top. so no tricks.
hint: thiss been the hardest checkmate in one since 1862 and theres actually TWO solutions !!
There are only 2 possible moves to check the black king..... how is that hard?

The solution is dxe6# (en passant).
Ah yes, maybe. Without knowing the previous moves (or at least the previous move) it would be impossible to know that.
*agrees from 5 years later*
The position is impossible to begin with. White has 2 sets of doubled pawns and no black pieces are missing. And the only black pawn missing isn't even the right file to be taken by a white pawn.
"Reviving"
... said the man in black. "Bumping" said the alien. They always quarrel.
Here's a puzzle where it can be proven what blacks last move was, white to move and mate in 2:
From the previous position before g7-g5 its actually a forced mate in 2 no matter what black plays.
bruh this is ez b2 bishop phases through the e5 pawn and takes the king. you gotta put your head in the game.

That's mate in 0! Though 0! is really 1! For mathies.
101 ways to checkmate in this position, take your pic. And the knight on h8 makes it fully legal as well. Someone else posted a 105 ways to mate position, just can't remember it as easily as this one.

I once tried to find an improvement but I don't think I succeeded. 105 appears incredible! Probably discovered checkmates. Btw, for anyone who wonders why the black knight is on h8: it played blacks last move; otherwise the position would be illegal with white to move!
And the knight doesn't interfere with any of the checks! Discovered checks with bishops behind rooks increased it in the other one. The Nc1 blocks 1 check but adds two.
