just one pawn is enough

Finally found it!! Been googling this d4 mate for quite some time now 🙂

This is an OLD puzzle. I first encountered it in some russian chess book written in the 50s or so. Don't remember the author though.

Yes, most puzzles posted here are old puzzles. The reason is that most modern puzzles are some degrees harder  (to solve and explain) than the old ones. Which is natural as the field of puzzle making evolves as other fields do. When most of the simple ideas have been shown the more intricate stuff remains and it's not for everyone. That's even true within the community of puzzle makers. Some prefer to take refuge in fairy chess which consists of chess variants with different rules of play. Every new variant offers opportunities to create some original challenges which are not that hard!

Thanks for constantly bumping this thread throughout the years. If that hadn't happened, I wouldn't be able to witness this extraordinary puzzle.

Fantastic! Sacrificing everything except a pawn to deliver checkmate!

Crazy Checkmate... Just taking pieces isn't always the key in chess... this proves it.

I've seen this before it's made by Konrad Bayer aka Drakon Rabey

Agadmator made a video on this one and explained the details and history
