Mate in 3 - puzzle for intermediate players

Hello everyone,

I created the following puzzle for intermediate chessplayers (between 1500 Elo and 1700 Elo).

The puzzle is an easy mate-in-3, and is taken from my last game.

Even though it's quite simple, the solution requires some creativity and understanding of the position as well as good tactics skills.

Can't the queen or rook block the queen check making it mate in 6 

I solved it, but I actually rejected the solution because I thought white could give up the rook and it wouldn't be a mate in three anymore. But then I thought your opponent probably didn't sac anything so I just went for it anyways. I'd be curious to know how the game would've proceeded if white just gave up the rook. It's hard to find the checkmate after that in your mind.
