Since none of Black's pieces can move other than the pawn on b4, the solution is pretty simple as you suggest, but I'm afraid that Stockfish does solve this rather easily now.

Actually, stockfish’s depth is more than 8. If stockfish can’t see it, it’s not mate in 8
