I've always thought of a variation of chess where toward the end of the game, a piece could move off of one side of the chess board and appear on the other. In this case, if a player had only their king remaining, it would take more than just a king and a queen to checkmate him/her. This is why I like endings where the king is trapped in a nine-square cage from which there is no escape. Try this puzzle and assume that if the king were pinned to the wall, he could warp to the other side of the board.
I realize that this is quite far-fetched for some, but I think someone should implement this into the game at some point.
