Puzzle Description

While watching the chess World Championships, at one point Judith Polgar and her nine-year-old companion set up a chess puzzle just by telling each other where the pieces are. As for myself, after reaching 2600 in puzzles, I have noticed that I am often not sure what is the purpose of a particular puzzle. As mating puzzles are rare, I don’t know whether to strive for material, position or a longer tactical set of moves. As noted, not everyone needs such information as experienced players don’t necessarily even need a board. For rook(ies) such as myself, some sort of description about the purpose of the puzzle would come handy.
