Global warming - an urgent problem requiring radical solution (no politics or religion)

I might but you probably wouldn't understand it.

"delaroach"? Seriously?

He can't keep up intellectually.

You are deluded and wrong: average temperatures continue to rise on the scale where short term oscillations are dominated by the signal of the trend (roughly a couple of decades).

Even the most arrogant science-denier can see that temperatures have risen significantly since global warming was identified as a threat. This is a successful prediction. Global warming is a long term phenomenon.

The main prediction is that they will continue to do so to a catastrophic level unless greenhouse gases are reigned in. Wise people who are concerned about future generations have to prevent greedy fools from causing this.

The Earth has been much warmer for most of its history - with no catastrophe.

And atmospheric carbon dioxide and global ambient temperture is not coupled

Virtually every graph and link you provided in the global warming thread was shot down with actual, credible evidence that showed it was bunk. So, what do you do? Arrive here, with more garbage.

Studying shit doesn't make you bright. It will only allow you to know more about shit.

Well, here we are in another synonymous thread, and you're spewing the same nonesense. Elroch and some are trying to do their best to show the faults in your "research" (I think most of the rest of the crowd has given up on you). But, you persevere, because you think your shit doesn't stink.

I call you delaroach because the name is apt.

Your comeback to many is to attack their knowledge and intelligence, because, as only you know, you're always the smartest in the room.

Conclusion: Polution is Bad. Wasteful use of energy is Bad. Caring about the world in which we live enough to try to make it better for all of our descendants is GOOD.  Let's get on with it.

Interesting.

Wrong again.  Solid science will always trump alarmist propaganda.

You are a Beta trying to participate in an Alpha conversation.  I'm not saying I am the smartest person in the room, but I know who is among the dumbest.

The "true believers" are the most easily swayed by junk science.

Jamie, with that intelligence of yours, you will recognise the significance of the fact that virtually all scientists accept the truth of anthropogenic global warming. You are about ten years behind even George Bush the second accepting expert advice, which is quite a feat considering that he wasn't the fastest to pick things up himself.

Or perhaps science itself is a scam, and what we credit to science actually comes from unassuming elves?

JeanMichelJamJar

its kinda cool how the words 'science' and 'scientists' make statements unquestionable!

No catastrophe?  Tell that to the dinosaurs.

Elroch

I believe Jamie simply has no grasp of the difference between a hundred years and a hundred million years. Put it this way, a 5 degree change over 100 million years (as indicated on his interesting but almost entirely irrelevant graph) is a change that is 200,000 times slower than the 1 degree change over 100 years that the Earth has just experienced.

It is very difficult to educate someone who has no interest in understanding, only in fooling themself.

Now, it's one thing to just miss this point entirely (not everyone is in the habit of interpreting data), but how will he now react to this point?

JeanMichelJamJar

and to understand, she really needs to assume the role of student being educated by the one who has it all worked out. thats great!

It means they are based on the scientific method, which is by its nature extremely reliable at reaching objectively correct conclusions. There is no doubt that the global climate is a difficult system to study, but there has been a great deal of effort put into understanding it better and better.

A spectacular visualisation of the global atmosphere (highly recommended, non-technical):

If the Alvarez theory (Chicxulub event) behind the K-T extinction event is accurate, it was the onset of rapid global cooling ("impact winter") that caused the mass extintion, including most of the dinosaurs.

JeanMichelJamJar

thanks for the video, Elroch.

That is indeed how mankind passes the essentials of the common knowledge gained by the whole of mankind to each generation: smart people learn from the knowledge gained by those who are most expert, mostly through competent third parties. It requires respect where respect is due, and humility in recognising the superior understanding of others who are the most skilled and devote the most effort.

It is certainly possible for people to reject the notion of learning from those who are more expert. The only downside is remaining ignorant. Even this is not shameful, but trumpeting ones ignorance as if it was more reliable than the expertise of others is shameful.

"Practically all scientists" supported phlogiston theory, Mendelian genetics, and the Dalton atomic model ... until they didn't.

Perhaps not today, in our current Brave New World.

In Hayek's "marketplace of ideas," even the scientists and their views are effectively bought and sold.

Scientists as intellectuals are NOT to be trusted, in this worldview.

You get the Science that you pay for.  Not unlike the new Supreme Court "voting rules" in the United States.

Votes depend on headcount, but they depend on "purchasing power" more so.

Here's a milder (economist) version of the same view above --

Elroch

That is a good description of the New Age conspiracy theorists' point of view. It is impossible for someone who is not scientifically ignorant to go along with it to any great extent, because such people are familiar with some of the vast wealth of knowledge that passes peer review and eventually (after thorough confirmation) becomes part of the body of knowledge.

But even such people (unless they are the most extreme wackos) know that science can produce a vaccine for Ebola (today's news) send detailed pictures of Pluto (requiring 0.00001% accurate navigation in space at a distance of a billion miles) and decode the genomes of a wide range of organisms, including humans. And a million other things.

Seriously, don't you few witch-burners realise that hypotheses get rejected all the time in the world of science because they are obliged to be consistent with all observations?

JamieDelarosa

Witch-burners?  The essense of the Global Warming alarmist arguments.

I have the education and professional experience to both understand and critique the science.  It is not all it's cracked up to be.

You are welcome to follow the pimrose path you are on.
