Here is a very interesting article where GM Joel Benjamin discusses why kids do not continue chess after elementary school going into high school:

He gives 3 main reasons that kids leave chess after elementary school:

1) Chess Programs are only in the lower grades in schools

2) When kids first start chess in elementary school they do not need to put a lot of effort into playing competitively but when in high school it takes much more effort to play competitive and many do not want to make this committment.

3) Many kids once entering middle school find other interests to compete with chess such as baseball, soccer, or karate which makes many quit playing chess.

What do you think? Do you agree or disagree with GM Joel Benjamin's assessment?

I think that as a former "youth" player, GM Benjamin can speak from his own experience and as a coach, he can speak from him own observations. Common sense also backs him up.

Probably because kids(who are forced by their parents) will quit chess as soon as they can.
