The moves was taught by my brother. I learned chess by playing. I don't know the coordinates. I learned the coordinates when I started playing chess online. Then, I've got chess softwares/programs and chess ebooks. Right now, I am a better chess player than before.

I joined this site a few years ago and I play for periods of 2 or 3 weeks every year

My boyfriend is teaching me chess😊
I started learning during childhood on my own with old Czech chess books, which was a way for me relax and sort of get away from a number of nonsense. Never really with too ambitious but I fell in love instantly.
I played chess with my grandma as a kid and then stopped playing for years. I started playing agian recently and wish I never would of stopped as a child

My dad taught me the rules. He didn't know en passant. Pretty sure he knew the other rules though. He had the book Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess which is a collection of mate in 1 and 2 puzzles. I solved some positions out of that.
I didn't actually become interested until age 18 though, and didn't go to a tournament until age 21.
When I was 8 I learned from my grandpa and got hooked, only to realize there is no chess in my area. Now I play chess by myself.
When I was maybe 10 or so, right after the first Harry Potter movie adaptation came out, I was really getting into the books. And seeing the franchise brought to screen was still amazing. I was fan, to say the least. My mom got my a chess set styled after the giant chess set shown towards the end of the first movie. She sat down with me and walked me through what all the pieces were, what they did, and what the objective was. But I never took it seriously.
I've dabbled in it off and on ever since, but never with any serious thought. But I think I'm finally at a point in my life where I can genuinely appreciate the game and enjoy it (albeit very casually but genuinely).
I have a vague memory of learning the basics as a kid, but I never really understood it and much preferred checkers. I only got into chess as an adult when I saw the Kickstarter Storytime Chess set. Since I will be student teaching soon, I thought they might make good gifts for my host teachers. And then I thought, if this chess set is designed to teach 3-year-olds how to play, then surely I can learn! So I downloaded an app on my Kindle, one on my phone, and bought Once a Pawn a Time chess set on Amazon to learn how as well. It's a slow process, but I'm glad I found chess.com too; this site has been very helpful, and I am now realizing just how much fun chess can be! (I suspect I will enjoy it even more when I actually starting winning.

This is ChessUniversity.com's sister website. https://www.chessvl.com/ they have free lessons (20 of them on video) they also have 'cheat sheets' you know info testing what you've learned. I'm just sharing the info since it helped me. I also like the videos here on chess.com
basic rules from my dad - since then I'm on self-learn-mode
