how do you improve your ratings? do you just practice and memorise openings?

I think practicing tactics is a lot more useful than openings.

But that is member only as well puzzles and lessons etc are all member only.

I'm mostly focused on tactics but I do have fun studying everything else.

chesstempo has free tactics training too. It'll give u a rating as well so u can measure ur progress.

You improve your rating by winning games. In order to do so. You have to practice, as well as playing many games

read books, practice tactics and go to tournaments.

in my experience, memorizing opening is the least effective way you can approach chess. i talk from experience
