How do you improve you ratings?

Don't bother memorizing openings until you have some more experience. For now, learn opening principles.

Also do tactical puzzles and learn the basic checkmates.

Spend more time studying chess and less time playing it.

Ignore anyone who asks you what your playing style is. You don't have a playing style. Amateur players don't have playing styles. We have blundering styles.

Why would that get 3 thumbs down?  Thats good advice, it's perfect for a sub 1000 to get better fast.

A daily puzzle and 3 regular puzzles per day are free here. If you solve these every day then you become better.

to improve your ratings you should have 1 opening repertoire that is best for you and play it as best as you can to win.

study or watch some games to learn from it

I improve by playing, playing, & more playing. & playing again & again & again, & again.

To improve your ratings, you have to play rapid only for some time. Also, you have to decide on the openings that are best for you. What are some of your favorite games? Describe your playstyle in three words?

Edit: I only now realized that the OP is not 1200, but 400.

You do not need to play rapid to improve. It can help, but it is not needed.

approach games with an open mind, do not just make the same moves in a robotic way.

break old habits, explore new openings. i try to gain a stronger position by sacrificing pieces.

be bold with unorthodox attacks that may baffle your opponent. these are some things that i keep in mind when playing to improve my rating.

AIMChess is even better if you are willing to improve. Go 7 bucks/ month they analyze all your chess.com games and, based upon the openings and endings that you play more and tactical motifs that you lose, make a weekly training programáticos

You improve your ratings by improving your play.

Not wrong.

Personal Experience: Until 1000 you should stydy just the first 5 moves of ONE opening for white and 1 defense against d4 and other against e4.Ideally some line that's ok but less known.

Btween 1000 and 1500 you keep with the tactics qand seen  more the same openings and start studying chess strategy to make plans at the middlegame. At this time, well commented classical games and a lot of chess videos help a lot , giving you theways the masters think...

After 1600 there will start appearing endings for you to play. As you've finished studying strategy, keep studying games played with your openings and get really secure playing them.Tactics at least 15 min/day continuously and study the ""100 end most important end games that any chess player should know".At 1800+ but below 2200you should study the stratefy, tactic and end book games writtern for masters to understand and know them all.You should also, besides keeping you 3 openings very strong, develop new ones for tournment play
