WHAT IN THE WORLD R U TALKIN ABOUT?!?!!?!
Recover Points Lost to CHEATS!!!!!!!
Hi all,
I know that there will always be disgraceful cheats on here, the same as there is in all walks of life! Congratulations to Chess.com for identifying these despicable people and then removing them from the site, unfortunately,it's often after they have 'stolen' 2 pts from their innocent opponent in team matches and this can swing matches to the opposing team's advantage.Surely there is a way that these points can be re-imbursed to the disadvantaged team? I'm certain that no teams wish to 'win' matches in this manner!

No DECENT team would want to win this way?
Erik and the other staff have already stated that points cannot be restored. This is fine, because it doesn't matter. After many more chess games are played, the ratings formerly affected by cheating have long since straightened out, and any evidence or effects from the cheating are long gone.
And so they should!!! So,zerobounds, you'd be ok if you'd played your guts out to secure points for your team in a match and then your team lost the whole match through the actions of a cheat on the oppsing team?
(Going out on a limb on behalf of zerobounds...) Of course not. That's why we're happy that cheaters get banned in the first place: we're not okay with such scenarios. Hence, we get rid of those players! If it happens, it happens. We do the best we can to keep the site cheater-free. If a tournament is lost as a result, there's always next time. (Zerobounds: forgive me if I have stepped on your toes.)
I've seen this sort of thread before. The problem with "restoring points" or whatever is that it's like throwing pebbles in a pond that keep rippling along. A huge number of adustments would have to be made in the ratings pool (get it? "pond"). In another words every person's rating who'd been effected would have to be adjusted and then all of the people that they'd subsequently played would also have to be adjusted and so on and so forth. I'm sure you can quickly see how this would be come a HUGE logistical problem.
The only way you could "return points" in the case of a cheat, in a practical way, would be if no subsequent games had been played by the involved parties.

USCF does this kind of things all the time. Tournaments are rated when received, and this sometimes happens in a wrong sequence. Then, they are re-rated and the changes ripple to the later held tournaments.
The algorithm for doing this is trivial (essentially linear complexity, since chess.com rating computations involve two-player "tournaments").
lego, perhaps that's true. However it's my guess that in the case of OTB players in the uscf it would virtually always involve way fewer games and players than here.
However if it can really be done in some simple sort of way, and I seriously doubt it, then you might consider contacting Erik directly and telling him so.
He is NOT talking about restoring rating points. He is saying that if in a team match the results end like this:
Fair Player 0-2 Cheater
there should be no reason it can't be changed to:
Fair player 2-0 Cheater (or 1-1, which would probably be better)
This way, the results of the games a cheater plays has no effect on the outcome of the team match.
Mike Should this not be moved to the Cheater Group Erik Runs Mate I hardly think the open Forums is the best place to talk about this just a thought
We are not talking about cheating here, we're talking about team match points.

Is excatly what wallyjack is trying to say here, is looked like half of the posters here has no ideas what is wallyjack talking about.
Oh, and as for my opinion, I think it would be a great idea in theory, however it would be fairly time consuming I imagine to retroactively change the results of all the team matches any given cheater has participated in. Maybe if the games actually make a difference in the outcome, there's a plave it can be reported to change it?
I don't think is would be a good idea to back dated, just when the new rule come in then we can work it from there.

Unfortunately, I seemed to be one of them. Sorry about the misunderstanding.
