I am confused as to how to return to a previous screen without having to start all over...is there a 'back' arrow that allows one to do this? Thx very much!

Every browser has a back arrow (generally a left-facing arrow in the top left of the screen) that will take you back to the previous screen. However, it won't in general undo any irreversible action you may have committed (such as submitting a move).

Thx for your reply, but I'm using the chess.com app and am not using safari or firefox etc....I play from my app on my iPad and have never seen a back arrow. So when I want to go back to a previous page, I am unable to do so. Any suggestions with that, when using the app? Thx again for answering!!!!!!

SirNoff

what is the solution for this?

You can use your phone's "Back" button — situated at the bottom right on Android-based phones (I can't say for sure about Apple, never having used one) — to retrace your steps to some extent.  While this may not get you to the exact location you were hoping for, it generally beats starting all over again from the very beginning.  A number of apps — Chrome and YouTube, for example, to name a few — have a "History" feature which can be quite useful as well.  But for general--purpose backtracking, your phone's own "Back" button is the way to go (for now).  Hope this helps. 😊  P. S. I've been trying for a while now to get the chess.com developers to add exactly this sort of built-in backtracking facility to the mobile app as an explicit feature.  It clearly is needed, and should be handled by the app itself, rather than relying on the OS to try and guess the user's intentions.  I'm still hoping this feature will be added to the app one of these days.  We will see!

I found why it doesnt work.

Samsung phones has a program named "game tools" in order to control buttons in the game, so we need to activate back button to go back to previous page.

Oh, really?  So on Samsung devices, the Back button defaults to being off? I wonder why?

SirNoff

In some action or sport games these buttons become a problem due to accidental touchs, so deactivation of them is mostly useful.

arabinativ

Ah, I see. Yes, of course. Thanks for explaining that.

If you are using chess.com computer app then you can go back to previous menu by clicking right click on empty space then click back option

I would assume that the OP already got the answer in the past 12 years.
