One can jump to the start by simply clicking the ^ Back to top link at the bottom right of the latest post that you are brought to.
Most recent post - suggestion
Thanks - Will try to use that - though I just tested with one "most recent" link and I ended up in the middle of the ost and had to scroll to the bottom to find that "back to top" link.
My point was: make it easier. It's just a line or two of template code.

"^ Back to top" takes you back to the start of the current page (of 20 or so posts) - not to the #1 post.
However, clicking on page 1 (just above "^ Back to top")
« Previous | 1 2 3 4 5 6 | Next » | Last Post
does take you back to the first post.
(Another link was suggested here).
Hey - @ the most recent post sidebar:
Currently the most recent post sidebar has a link to the most recent post in a particular thread. That is good. I often find though that I haven't been following the thread so when clicking on the "most recent" I then have to scroll or page back through previous posts to get context/the gist of what is being discussed.
It would be a small but welcome change to add a "first" or "thread" link next to the the name/link of the most recent person who posted. That way if a thread has not been followed and there are many replies, one can jump to the start.
Cheers. Hi Eric ;)
