Seek games by location...?

Sort:

Sometimes it would be nice to create open game or seek open games by location.

Why?

- it is nice to play with someone on same time zone.

- Sometimes you want to meet people from certain country (your favorite holiday location, old home place...)

- if you like to chat, common language is really nice thing...

This wouldn't be too difficult to add, would it?

There may be hidden complexities. Would you expect the search to be in terms of:

- a single country that the member has designated from the country list?

- a set of countries? (Quite tricky to specify via a menu option and hard to process). Also difficult to map Time Zone to countries or vice versa.

- members can specify TimeZone on their profile but given the current levels of paranoia, I wouldn't want to rely on it being accurate

- what about the people who have specified International? Would you exclude them?

- many people are not physically located in the countries they have designated. Would you use their GeoIP location instead?

Maybe just exclude/include countries...

It's a neat idea - and ideal for anyone trying-to-play-someone-from-every-country.

The User Interface would be challenging to get right: for instance, displaying all 239  'countries' with a radio button against each one would be unwieldy.

Nah, one drop down combo box, just like in any registeration form, or maybe two boxes, one for include, one for exclude...

Are there any drop down combo boxes in the website at present? The registration form only allows you to select ONE country - or were you suggesting picking one country AT A TIME?

Pussimatti

MultiSelect is basic operation for Combo boxes. You can select many countries with Control-key or list of countries with Shift.

-I am off to creece tomorrow, it would have been nice to play with someone from the creece before my trip.

-I was an exchange student, it would be nice to play with those locals

-Since I usually start new games at morning Finnish time, only ones up are from asia. No much chatting. Now I have learned to put out new challenges at evening when USA is waking up

Just an thought...

This scheduled challenge---later  feature might have helped - as long as it was on the clock as well as on the calendar.

I avoid accepting games where the location is something like " The Universe". I like to know the time zone at least , of the person I am playing. If someone thinks that this is too much info to post on their profile so that they will be tracked down by the "internet stalkers", then I think I probably wouldn't enjoy playing with that opponent anyway....Wink

People interested in matching time zones could help by entering  own time zone in their location box.I am trying to promote this idea with site but not much interest being shown although it would be an easy improvement when time (!) allows. Friend Pussimatti could follow example already adopted by some members of modifying their location box entry to include  their  own GMT(or of course UTC if preferred) Site has not made any objection to this do- it - yourself  help and it could catch on....please glance at my profile for example, which goes some way at least in helping timing cosiderations.

What about those people who try to hide the location of their pieces on the board?

You are in usual good form today Art, loved your comment "Worth every penny" in Finding good staff thread.
