That's a good idea.
Presumably you would need to either switch on tracking or actually post in each topic in that category as it came up (or just the ones of interest)? That way, you would be able to monitor them in either Topics I have Posted in or Topics I am Tracking.
Well, I don't actually want to receive a notification for each new post -- what I'd like is to get one once for each topic when it is initially created (similar to how the forum alerts work for groups). I don't think that there's currently any way to do this in the forums.

I don't get it. What's track forum catagories? I just go to Today's Hot Topics when i'm bored and track the ones I am interested in...? Is there some other feature?

Very good Art. Now what I am asking is...what level of tracking is available of which I'm unaware? We can currently track at...a topic level? I only know how to track by thread.
Then you also know how to track by topic. 
Further to the theme of multiple topic tracking: it would also be handy to be able to manage tracking at the topic listing level. If a checkbox (or mouseover) was provided next to the topic name, you would be able to modify your tracking preferences on 20 topics at a time. e.g.

Did tracking used to be automatically switched on for a topic every time you posted in it? This would seem to be a reasonable default. (It's already enabled on topics you initiate.)
If this convention were adopted then presumably, if you explicitly untracked the topic and then subsequently posted in it, tracking would be switched on again.
I used to be able to stay on top of these requests because the single thread showed up in my "Topics I have Posted In" list. Now that there is a Forum Category dedicated to it, it's quite a bit more difficult to do so.

It would be interesting to be able to set up alerts for themes e.g. I'd like to receive an alert every time someone created a new topic on the subject of etiquette. The feature might encourage more meaningful titling of topics too.

And vice versa. e.g. NEVER EVER (EVER) alert me about topics referring to waffles - IRRESPECTIVE of whatever other alert conditions I have set.
