First Tournament

Hi, are there any resources available explaining the format and length of on line tournaments?  I am a beginner, but would like to try one to get some experience. Questions:  (1) Are there any tournaments that accept contestants with low ratings or no rating at all? (2)  How much time should I expect for the length of the tournament? (3) Does a tournament start at a specific time with a continued synchronization of games based on the maximum per game time, or is it more like a rolling entry process where people join at different times and the games begin and end throughout a more extended time period? (4) Does playing with oponents using the challange feature establish a rating for me, or is this only done by playing in tournaments?  Thank you for being patient with my questions, as I'm certain my inexperience is evident.

So many questions!

The most popular tournaments online are Arena tournaments. All players can enter. There are a few tournaments for low rated and unrated players but most are open to all. The winner is the one who scores the most points. You can get bonus points for winning two or more in a row.

They match players mostly by rating. You play as many games as you can in the allowed time. A typical arena lasts for an hour. You can play as many games as you have time for.

You can get a rating by just clicking "Play" and choosing a time control. You will be automatically matched.

You can also get ratings in tournaments.

Good luck.
