Too! many games at once

Sort:

Playing 24 games at once takes the fun out of tournaments. I was disappointed and withdrew from a tournament. So My rating fell 200 points. I would like to know more what I am getting into next time.

Take care to find out about the tournaments you are entering to avoid putting yourself in the same position again!  All the information about a tournament is available before you agree to play.

I agree RLN. I saw the tourney ye refer too, a group of 12 people..  in cases like that definately 1 concurrent match at a time would be sensible for the director to setup instead.

The thing is, SonofPearl, that the setup does not actually display how many concurrent games there will be in a tourney... so when i set one up i always manually type that in so people do know.

It would be handy if it was displayed in the tourney info if it was 1 or 2 concurrent games. It is a small but vital piece of info.

Yah, it would be great if erik did that *wink wink*

good points people!

It originally didn't occur to me that every game would be simultaneous, when tournaments first rolled out.

Are there any other practical tournament layouts that would work well, scaled over a site like this?  I seem to remember there originally being an option to change the format of a tournament, but there was only one option.

you can choose to have smaller groups and fewer numbers of games start immediately. you can, if you want, choose groups of 2, and have only one game at a time start. so you would only be playing 1 game at a time :)

there are no other practical tournament options for large sites like this and turn-based chess. everything else is SLOWER :)

Something similar just happened to me... 12 games at once... It's a thematic tourney and I'm enjoying the games I've given 100% to, but I can't do that with every game and it really bugs me.  Didn't know what I was getting into. I wouldn't join this kind of set-up again.  I was ready for  six simultaneous games (I know many folks have more going on at a time than that, but for my taste 6 is my max.) ... and was startled to see that I was playing a white and black game against each opponent simultaneously. I think it should be one color at a time.

Look at the entries in Upcoming Tournaments. If you see for example 4(2)->1 under the Format heading, the number 2 in the brackets means 2 games at once with all opponents.

Ooohh! I couldn't quite work out what that number signified..  thanks for explaining that, much appreciated cheers TadDude.

Thank you gentlemen,

It is comforting to know I am not alone.  Not just  lost and ignorant. I really did not know what I was getting into. And now I'm more informed on the matter. I did not know  the language. The short hand numeric information attached to tournaments was cryptic and small print to me. Very gracious of you gentlemen to aid me and other new comers in gaining understanding. It's a hard pill to swallow the rating drop that took me three months and over 200 games to establish and stabilize. An accurate rating means a great deal to me and to potential opponents. A consecutive 24 game loss is very disruptive and will take some time to recover from.

Hopefully this type of interaction will help others not to suffer unnecessary.

24 games at the same time. I'd drop out too. I'm in one now where we play 4 games at once and just that is almost a bit much for me since I usually have at least one or two normal games running too.

I was in that tournament and as much as i enjoy 2 wins, i disenjoy not being able to actually win them.

It is hard to play that many games but unlike others, i actually enjoy it...

I had a similar experience.  I knew what I was getting into, 24 games additional, but I figured that by the date shown for the tournament I'd be finished most of my games and would only have 25-30  simultaneously.  Well... that's when I discovered that the date shown is only the latest the tournament will start, and that if it fills up sooner it will start immediately.

I ended up with a whole lot of games, and I'm going to claim that two of my blunders were due to playing more games than I was used to and rushing the replies (all my other blunders were the result of my usual playing style which tends to be a bit precarious).

But the end result was that I enjoyed the multiple games so much that I now find more enjoyment taking on higher numbers than I did with my previous < 10 attitude.

My only problem with high numbers of games (and I'm experiencing it now) is that when the site slows down it can be very frustrating trying to make moves when the screen takes so long to refresh.

Erik and co.. thank you! That was a speedy fix which looks great and which will definately help people be more aware of how many games they will be getting into in a tourney. Cheers fer listening and acting!
RLN
Ya thanks very much for the fix Erik. Its nice to know your acting in our best interest. This type of interaction really works.

I gave redhotman a chance to win. He lost.
