Tournament cancels for no reason?

Hi

I have started a private club and created a live tournament as a test (just two players).  Both players joined, then the countdown began ("get ready to play" etc message appeared  on screen), then it just went to "cancelled".  Don't understand - can someone help please?

You can't have a tournament of more than one round with just two players.

The cancellation of chess tournaments can occur for various reasons. Let’s explore a few scenarios:

Insufficient Participation:

Sometimes, tournaments get canceled due to a lack of participants. For example, if there are only two players, it might not meet the minimum requirement for a proper tournament format.
In a Swiss-style tournament, which is commonly used in chess, you typically need at least four players to have a two-round event1.
In some cases, even more players may be required for specific formats1.
External Factors:

Coronavirus Pandemic: Major chess events, such as the Dubai Open and the Reykjavik Open, were canceled due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. However, other top events like the FIDE Candidates Tournament and the Grenke Chess Classic managed to proceed, at least for the time being2.
Logistical Challenges: Sometimes, logistical issues related to sponsorships, broadcast partners, or venue arrangements can lead to cancellations. For instance, the highly anticipated match between Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura during Ludwig’s Chess boxing event was called off due to such challenges3.
Unforeseen Circumstances:

Occasionally, unforeseen circumstances arise, causing organizers to cancel or postpone tournaments. These could include legal or regulatory issues, safety concerns, or financial constraints.
In your case, it seems you were expecting a pair (perhaps of chess players), but the cancellation caught you off guard. While it may seem odd, remember that behind the scenes, there are often complex reasons at play. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♀️
