Tourney vacation status

Nathan74, thanks for your reply.  I agree with your idea about responsible use of vacation time.  I think to hold up a tournament for weeks would be irresponsible.

To disallow vacation time for what is essentially a correspondence tournament/games is simply ludicrous. As mentioned games/tournaments can go on for months. To assume that the whole world can stop just so you can have your game completed is simply lacking forethought and understanding.

Lets take the whole thing into context. If someone is using vacation to slow down the inevitable, a mate in 2 for example, yet continues to log onto the site to play other games, then yes, this is abuse of the vacation rule (By the way, this situation has been brought up on another thread). I believe, and hope that Chess.com is looking into this and seeks to find a way to stop it.

However...

If someone legitimately goes on vacation for any amount of time from all their games, and returns as normal, then there can be absolutely no complaining. It is important that those of you that have no lives understand that many have to work, and live a life outside of the game. Family needs come first, children, food on the table, and the all important dollar, peso, insert currency here.

If you are unwilling to realize that other people are helping make the world go round while you sit still then it is you who is being rude, not the other way around.

I'm new to correspondence chess. Although I do realize that this is not for players in too much of a hurry to finish a game and that vacation time is not frowned upon as a chess tactic, I don't quite understand why you set a time limit in the first place if players can get away with going on vacation whenever they are in game trouble or time trouble. There is  a player in the tournament I'm in that has 42 games (and several tournaments) going on at the same time. He/She went on vacation a number of times in the past few weeks (in some games but not in others). Perhaps, they really did need the time off and perhaps not. The question is IMHO that you need to know your capabilities and limitations. If you can't do the time don't commit to it! (especially during tournament play)

It seems there is a workable solution to this problem.  Rather than change the vacation policy, why not give the tournament director a 'No Vacation' option.  I would gladly play in a tournament that doesn't allow vacation time, in exchange for a quicker pace.  Would that be hard to code?

What a stupid post. My Dad had heart failure a week and a half ago. I flew to see him and couldn't play online for the 3 days I was there. I used my vacation over that period so as to not forfeit my games. I'm sure others here have had similar things happen.

You don't want to play correspondence chess? Then don't do it.

Nathan74 @ #21 Well said. That, I can get behind.

Actually I do want to play correspondence chess, but I would like the tournaments to be finished in a timely manner.  I have a feeling there are a lot of players that feel the same way.  My suggestion doesn't hurt you one bit.  If you see an upcoming tournament that has a 'No Vacation' policy, then don't join it.  I'm fairly certain the administrators will still run tournaments that allow vacation.  For that matter, you or any one else could host a tournament that allows vacation.  All I was saying is allow the tournament director the OPTION, before the tournament starts, to allow vacation or not.

OK people, I hear you.  I am talking more about the person who makes one move at the moment the tourney begins and then goes on vacation. I know people have emergencies, and "vacation" is for that. It isn't for those that want to play when only they want to play. I can see everyone's point here.  Maybe there is a way to make everyone happy.

i agree/disagree with vacation during a tournament..i can very easily understand using your vacation in a tournament for something you must tend to,however im involved in a tournament right now and i have been keeping an eye on this guys use of vacation..when the tournament started he had 66 games going at one time..he has made 3 moves in our game that has been going on for 5 days..its not that 5 days bother me,but our game has been put on vacation 3 times already and the number of games he is playing now is 78..i love playing chess and play as many games as i can.but i do not load myself down to where i cannot make moves within the time that the game challenge has been issued/accepted.this is very aggravating for me because i dont like to get to many games going at once because of my work schedule and limited time of being able to be on here and my RESPECT for others in making a move in a reasonable amount of time. And because of his disrespect to others and myself that have limited time i cannot play new games with new people and meet more of the very pleasant people here and have the chance of learning or teaching. If you cannot handle the game load you have chosen then do not accept a challenge or issue one if you know you do not have the time to dedicate to it.Again i understand unexpected things for a need for vacation, but just because you have to many games going i dont think is right.I guess my point is I feel that vacation time should NOT be taken away from tournaments,BUT limited to a certain amount of time.Maybe 2-5 days or something like that.Im glad that we have a vacation option its very convenient and thoughtful of the owners of this site.but dont abuse it.i know many of you will agree and disagree with me but that just my thoughts on it.everyone is open to an opinion right?
